About this listen

Celtic Mythology, Dark Ages Fantasy

Can Anroth and the goddess Danu defeat their enemies Birog and Balor or will Celtic culture simply become a footnote in British history?

Inspired by Celtic mythology, Anroth the Druid, recalls the six day festival of Lúnasa, in the Kingdom of Northumbria, the year A.D. 543, a time and place in which myth and reality are inseparable.

When the Celtic high chieftain Midar’s three sons return to Northumbria for the six-day festival of Lúnasa after a raid on Pictish Gododdin – ruled by the warlord Balor and his sister Birog, a shape-shifting black druidess – the trophies they bring back provoke all-out war between the two kingdoms.

Greyeyes one of the last great Celtic seers and storytellers relays the unfolding events. Bloody battles against Pict and Saxons ensue. Into this turbulent world steps the powerful goddess Danu in the guise of a young woman. She confides in the druid Anroth – Northumbria’s ‘warrior of the mind’.

I loved it. A great read for any fan of historical fiction. The narrator has a very melodic and poetic reading style. Highly recommend.
