Story
Every life is made up of thousands of moments. Moments that make us who we are. But what if those moments don't happen the way we think they should? What if you got on the wrong bus, or didn't speak to the right person at a party, or stayed in the wrong guest house on holiday? Would you miss your chance at happiness? Or would happiness find you eventually, when the moment was right? Meet Matthew and Myrtle.

Story
After a car accident, Jarred discovers he'll never walk again. Confined to a 'giant roller-skate', he finds himself with neither money nor job. Worse still, he's forced to live back home with the father he hasn't spoken to in 10 years. Add in a shoplifting habit, an addiction to painkillers and the fact that total strangers now treat him like he's an idiot, it's a recipe for self-destruction. As he tries to piece his life together again, he looks back over his past and the tragedy that blasted his family apart.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant Nobel-prize-nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
Everyone tells Martha Friel she is clever and beautiful, a brilliant writer who has been loved every day of her adult life by one man, her husband Patrick. So why is everything broken? Why is Martha - on the edge of 40 - friendless, practically jobless and so often sad? And why did Patrick decide to leave? Maybe she is just too sensitive, someone who finds it harder to be alive than most people. Or maybe - as she has long believed - there is something wrong with her.

Story
The inhabitants of the Inventor's Housing Estate keep themselves to themselves. There are the friendly 'Hellos' when commutes coincide and the odd cheeky eye roll when the wine bottles clank in number seven's wheelie bin, but it's not exactly Ramsay Street. The dilapidated community centre is no longer the beating heart of the estate that Becky remembers from her childhood. So the new pottery class she's helped set up feels like a fresh start. And not just for her.

Jean Swinney is a feature writer on a local paper, disappointed in love and - on the brink of 40 - living a limited existence with her truculent mother: a small life from which there is no likelihood of escape. When a young Swiss woman, Gretchen Tilbury, contacts the paper to claim that her daughter is the result of a virgin birth, it is down to Jean to discover whether she is a miracle or a fraud. But the more Jean investigates, the more her life becomes strangely (and not unpleasantly) intertwined with that of the Tilburys.

Story
Anna is at a stage of her life when she's beginning to wonder who she really is. She has separated from her husband, her daughter is all grown up and her mother - the only parent who raised her - is dead. Searching through her mother's belongings, she finds clues about the West African father she never knew. Through reading his student diary, chronicling his involvement in radical politics in 1970s London, she discovers that he eventually became the president - some would say the dictator - of a small nation in West Africa. And he is still alive.

Western telling of an African story
- By Tsitsi Mhene on 13-12-21
Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
She could be the girl dancing on tables one night, and the next she'd be hiding in the shadows.
Just when I thought I understood her, she would melt away and become a completely new person, and I'd have to start all over again.
That's how it was with Anna.
Nick and Anna work the same summer job at their local cinema. Anna is mysterious, beautiful and from a very different world to Nick.
She's grown up preparing for the end of days, in a tightly controlled existence where Christmas, getting drunk and sex before marriage are all off-limits.
So when Nick comes into her life, Anna falls passionately in love. Their shared world burns with poetry and music, cigarettes and conversation - hints of the people they hope to become.
But Anna, on the cusp of adulthood, is afraid to give up everything she's ever believed in and everyone she's ever loved. She walks away and Nick doesn't stop her.
Years later, a tragedy draws Anna back into Nick's life.
But rekindling their relationship leaves Anna and Nick facing a terrible choice between a love that's endured decades and the promises they've made to others along the way.

A beautifully written book - definitely not just a love story
I loved this book, a story where you aren’t disappointed by the outcome but you feel the pain of and reality of life and how it rarely goes the way you expect.

Disappointing
Two annoying characters who take twenty years to get together. Supposed to be a study of someone torn by their religion but actually just an irritating, short sighted, girl toying with the emotions of a very dull young man. Yes I was disappointed.

Beautiful
Wonderful book, such a pleasure to listen to and to follow the bitter, sweet love story of Nick and Anna, through their complex, and completely different lives. Loved the way the story moved backwards and forwards through time in-order to explore the emotional difficulties both Nick and Hannah faced in their early lives and how it impacted on their relationship. One of those books you don't want to finish, but are desperate to know what happens in the end.
