Nothing happens?!

So disappointed. I really thought I’d like this book living in manchester where it is set... but nothing happens?! No storyline...Some nice phrasing but that’s about it

i didn't hook onto the story except last chapters

There were some good elements to this book, I quite like the author's style of writing, but I just didn't hook onto the story at all. I was a bit bored by most of it, although I did enjoy the last few chapters and how it ends

Great performance, ok story.

I saw the film before listening to the book, and found the film more engaging. The audio is well narrated- but the 2 main characters aren’t that likeable on the whole and I found it hard to follow with conviction.

The antidote to healthy living

I loved this meandering story of debauched youth and the characters glibly pontificating about life. The observations were clever and honest and just beautifully written, particularly the nuggets of everyday detail. The main character has thoughts I recognise but I've never seen them expressed in a book before. Well, not by a woman. The narration was perfect. Very listenable.

Perfect

Absolutely brilliant. The best narrator I have heard on audible, dipping in and out of each character’s accent- so impressive.

frustrating!

The narrator was great, super accents and well read. I found one of the characters particularly grating, with literally no redeeming features about her, and I struggled to understand why someone would be friends with her. Some interesting dynamics within the book, but I felt some aspects lacked depth or reason.

Trying to hard

It could have been a great book if the characters were a little bit more believe. In most parts it felt that the author was trying too hard to portray the characters as unconventional as possible that they ended up coming across as not real. The narration was great just let down by the writing

Grows on you.

Good narration and broughtvthe characters out very well. Mo best moment - itwas more how the book grew on me as I read it. No real story going in but you realise some way in that that's ok as the pennny srops its about their own place in their own lives. Found myself really looking forward to ths next opportunity doe a listen - always a good sign. My innitial worry that. I wasnt going to get into it was unfounded . Enjoyed

Loved it

An amazing narrator and truly memorable characters. This story is beautifully written; sort of a fusion of gritty reality and gorgeous poetic prose.

Fantastic narrator; great story

Would you listen to Animals again? Why?

I don't usually listen to audiobooks again but I'll be looking for the narrator's other work and I've added the author's other book to my wishlist.

What did you like best about this story?

I really enjoyed this book but I think a large part of my enjoyment might have been the audiobook's narrator -- i could listen to her read the Manchester phonebook.
The story itself was interesting; i like reading about women's friendships, particularly women my age. The "Withnail & I with vaginas" comment in another review was spot on and there were some gorgeous turns of phrase here. There were some places where the narrative lagged but it was forgivable.

Have you listened to any of Chloe Massey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not yet but looking forward to it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh and laugh and cringe a little. I ended up telling a friend about some of the embarrassing moments from the book.
