Summary

A group of scientists fed up with the post-Hiroshima world set themselves up with the resources to produce a phenomenally fast stealth plane which can intercept missiles - and hope to use it to bring about world peace. Recruited as a test pilot, can the hero stop a world from sliding into chaos?

Enjoyable if a little dated

A little dated now but well written and very well performed, an interesting examination of the nuclear weapons problem

Thunderbirds for grown-ups

I came to this having read and thoroughly enjoyed Lunnon-Wood's 'military quartet'. This is a rather different beast. Whereas those are fairly well-grounded tales with a strong sense of realism, this is more of a fantasy tale. Whereas his other works outclass the fantasy techno-thrillers of other (often US) writers, this nestles very much in that field. A secret but hugely powerful organisation bent on nuclear disarmament builds a hypersonic plane armed with lasers years ahead of its time and uses it to coerce and encourage the world to nuclear disarmament. The comparisons with 'Thunderbirds' and International Rescue are hard to avoid. There are no visible puppet strings, but if there are such things in an audiobook, then they are here. It is OK, if that is your thing. Another reviewer speaks of this being an emotional listen. It is true that all of Lunnon-Wood's other novels have a healthy dollop of sentimentality in them. This is no exception. In those other cases, it is grounded in a solid, strong and believable story. Here, it is much more comic-strip and, for me at least, rather less engaging as a result.

Truly awful

An extremely poor story, long winded with poor characterisation. I certainly would never listen or read another book by this author.

What a book!!

I stumbled on this book and I am so glad that I did. I thought the story was superb and the performance equally brilliant. I’ve already downloaded another by Lunnon-Wood and I cannot wait to get started.

Superb storyline excellent narration

An excellent storyline with a great narrator, this is a wonderful boys own adventure with a serious message. If you like military adventures you will love this. I have loved all of Mike's books it's a pity he died before he could write more.

I tried

I did, I promise I tried.... I found that I disliked the main character so much I wanted him to fail - he takes off on the hero mission and I'm walking to work mumbling "crash and die you antipodean git, self righteous, arrogant shit that you are". It's a shame really because the fundamentals of a good story is there, well hidden but there nonetheless. Yes it's dated in the context of today's technology but I could see the framework of a good yarn. I got half way called it a day, I had an opportunity to stick knitting needles in my ears and found it preferable to finishing to book off. I'll leave it in my library just in case but have the feeling it'll attract electronic dust on the shelf, never to be picked up again.

Starts of Boring.

And then it gets even worse. No action, and a poor political thriller as well, if that is what it is portraying itself to be. And if it was supposed to be about the plane, well then you will be even more disappointed. Boring snooze fest.
