About this listen

Packed full of powerful stories and teachings, this book is full of lessons for anyone in any walk of life…

And Then What...? is a frank account of Drewe's playing days over 17 years with 22 clubs. But it also offers a fascinating, topical insight into his current work today helping to mentor professionals through the high and lows of the game. As a former England youngster tipped for the top, Drewe, 40, admits his career was dogged and undermined by soul searching and self-doubt.

It culminated in the big center-forward going into rehab for addictions and an emotional breakdown after retiring. Nowadays, Drewe is putting his experiences to good use helping the next generation of players cope with the pressures and pitfalls of football. His knowledge and ability to nurture players has helped Drewe build a portfolio of clients, including internationals and Premier League stars.

Articulate Drewe has also become a go-to person for media to interview as more players start to publicly admit to mental health problems. In the last year alone, several, including Michael Carrick and David Cotterill, have publicly spoken about mental health battles. Drewe believes it is the tip of an epidemic in a game that chews up and spits out talent when it is no longer useful or profitable. He has strong opinions he will share after seven years of guiding some of the nation's best young footballers. This year, he also made his debut in the corporate world mentoring CEOs and senior management at three London corporations in the city on how to cope with pressure and improve performance.

His thoughts on self-belief, ego, winning, and vulnerability are as applicable to parenthood and business as they are to football. Today, Drewe combines his mentoring work with high-performance clients with motivational speaking and his role as an ambassador for the mental health charity Kaleidoscope.

A thought provoking insight into the real life of a footballer, the human being behind the fasade and the brutal ‘man up’ footballing industry.

And Then What..? by Drewe Broughton is a must read, a raw, honest and fiercely human. His journey through success, fear, collapse and rebuilding makes one message impossible to ignore. You cannot thrive in elite sport without authenticity and a healthy disrespect for the noise, the labels and the expectations placed on you.
That hit home for me. As a parent of a son in elite sport and also someone who works in elite sport, the book changed how I show up. Instead of getting caught in external pressure or trying to “fix” everything for young athletes, I’m now more focused on helping them stay true to who they are and encouraging them to challenge anything that doesn’t feel right. Drewe’s insight reminded me that growth comes from honesty, not compliance.
It’s a powerful reset on identity, resilience and what real support actually looks like.

A wake up call for anyone navigating elite sport
