Summary

The number one best seller and Sunday Times Humour Book of the Year by national treasure Bob Mortimer.

Bob Mortimer’s life was trundling along happily until, suddenly in 2015, he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away....

Although his childhood in Middlesbrough was normal on the surface, it was tinged by the loss of his dad and his own various misadventures (now infamous from his appearances on Would I Lie to You?), from burning down the family home to starting a short-lived punk band called Dog Dirt. As an adult, he trained as a solicitor and moved to London. Though he was doing pretty well (the South London Press once crowned him ‘The Cockroach King’ after a successful verdict), a chance encounter in a pub in the 1980s with a young comedian going by the name Vic Reeves set his life on a different track. And now, six years on, the heart condition that once threatened his career has instead led to new success on BBC2’s Gone Fishing.

Warm, profound and irrepressibly funny, And Away is Bob’s full life story (with a few lies thrown in for good measure).

A wonderful book

You can hear Bobs voice with every word. Although to be fair this the audible version, so that makes sense.

Bleeped swearwords?

Bleeping out the c-word? Really, Simon and Shoe-ster? It's a book, not a tabloid newspaper!

Heart healthy

A lovely glimpse into the life and times of Bob Mortimer.
A book that is funny, moving and whimsical.
Bob talks openly about depression and his shyness which he found socially crippling, in a refreshing, matter of fact way.
We need to wrap Bob in cotton wool and take care of him he's a national treasure.

Wonderful Man.

Listening to Bob is like listening to a Teesside version of your best mate. You want to hear every story he tells, buy him a pint then give him a hug when he offers you his fettaaa cheese.

Read it. Especially if you’re a shy individual

Like every autobiography I have read, this book reminds you to travel, make decisions based on gut instinct, take every opportunity to meet new people and eventually you’ll have a life you love.

Why censor an autobiography? Please don’t do that.

If you purchase an autobiography by someone like Bob Mortimer, you should already know what you might expect to hear from time to time. I for one don’t appreciate having certain words bleeped out. I want the book in its entirety because I am an adult and am happy to hear and use every word in the language.

I wish I could give it more stars

I love Bob Mortimer, and this book made me love him even more. I recommend anyone familiar with him, or even if you're not, give this one a listen.

And remember, always carry some spare pocket meat (or cheese) on your person.

Brilliant!

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to Bob tell his story. I could completely picture all the stories playing out from the way Bob describes them in his unique way, pure joy. Laughed a lot and didn’t want it to end.

Newly (to me) discovered genius of Mr. Mortimer

This book is grand Bob's stories and the way he tells / reads them are worth the audiobook alone. His WILTY appearances are comic genius and had to know more about this man.

Pure boro awesomeness

I am a few years younger than Bob, but everything he talked about, reminded me of my childhood, my friends, my school, my Journey to college, and the friends that have come and gone. a pure pleasure to listen to his flat northern tone, but fascinating stories and life.

Insightful and funny

Great behind the scenes stuff. So interesting to hear about Bobs earlier life and how he and Vic got together. Bob is very humble and refers many times to Vic's genius but to all us fans there couldn't have been a Vic without a Bob. I think I would have preferred to read the book rather than listen to the audiobook as its a bit flat at times as if Bob is just reading a script rather than reliving the memories as we've seen him do so brilliantly on Would I Lie to You for example. I can't wait to read his other book The Satsuma Complex too.
