About this listen

In 1350 the people of Cambridge are struggling to overcome the effects of the Black Death - and with a high mortality rate among priests and monks, the townsfolk are vulnerable to sinister cults that have sprung up. At Michaelhouse, Matthew Bartholomew is training new physicians when the body of a friar is found in the massive chest that the university uses to store precious documents. While investigating, Bartholomew stumbles across a derelict church being used as a meeting place for the mysterious sect he believes is at the heart of a web of blackmail and deceit - with intention to overthrow the established religion.

Well read and a good plot. I couldn't work out who dunnit. Characters well written and well voiced. Historical references very interesting too.

A good listen.

I thoroughly enjoy Susanna Gregory's medieval murder mysteries. I decided to listen to one on Audible. Unfortunately one of the main characters, Brother Michael, who is portrayed in the novel as a rather clever middle class gluttonous Friar Tuck is turned into a flaming camp gay cleric. It ruined the whole dynamic of the characters interrelationships. It feels as though Brother Michael is about to burst forth with an, "Oh get the madam ducky," like a 1970s stereotypical acidic gay comedy character. It ruins the book and gives it a tinge of homophobic black comedy.

Narrator turns Brother Michael into Julian Clary

I don’t usually flinch from complex stories but this was really quite tricky to follow. However, superbly read and a ‘good yarn’.

Very complex

A bit far-fetched but a well narrated story about 14th century England in the aftermath of the Black Death

Well told story
