About this listen

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES NO.1 BESTSELLER

Art restorer and legendary spy Gabriel Allon must solve the perfect crime in the dazzling new tale of murder, greed, and corruption from #1 New York Times bestselling novelist Daniel Silva.

Sometimes the only way to recover a stolen masterpiece is to steal it back …

Gabriel Allon has been awarded a commission to restore one of the most important paintings in Venice. But when he discovers the body of a mysterious woman floating in the waters of the Venetian Lagoon, he finds himself in a desperate race to recover a lost masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci.

The painting, a portrait of a beautiful young girl, has been gathering dust in a storeroom at the Vatican Museums for more than a century, misattributed and hidden beneath a worthless picture by an unknown artist. Because no one knows that the Leonardo is there, no one notices when it disappears one night during a suspicious power outage. No one but the ruthless mobsters and moneymen behind the theft – and the mysterious woman whom Gabriel found in a watery grave in Venice. A woman without a name. A woman without a face.

Fabulous narration. It's as if the research for this book and Portrait of an Unknown Woman were done at the same time as so many of the characters, aspects, locations, actions so similar as to make me stop to gather my thoughts and register exactly which book I am listening to.

This jolt to my attention caused me to flag, not a good sign as I didn't know how to kindle the impetus to go on.

BUT, when I picked up the story again, I was treated to a fast, furious and satisfying resolution of the tale, complete with a full narrated bibliography, which was almost as intriguing as the story.

Almost all of our favourite characters appear at some point and the junior Allons are starting to blossom as well

As Good as always

This is absolutely written and highly intelligent spy thriller which also looks at not only the art world but deals into the whole corruption of money laundering that has taken place in many areas including the Vatican. The return of Gabriel Allon is most welcome along with his colleagues. It’s an intelligent book and one with compassion and heart.
This book has a little bit of everything for everyone art history, espionage, subterfuge, murder, lost loves, good food and drink, just all of it ! Highly recommend
