Summary

Book one in a fantasy series of super rich magical dynasties and warring heirs - from the author of the million-copy-selling Alex Verus series. For readers of contemporary fantasy who enjoy the methods and magicians of dark academia...

ANYONE CAN USE MAGIC - IF THEY CAN AFFORD THE PRICE...

In a world where everything magical is bought up and controlled by the super rich - Stephen Oakwood has inherited a natural talent for magic. Plunged by his father's disappearance into a glittering world of scheming dynasties, warring patriarchs and vicious scions, Stephen must navigate magical high society and learn to control his gifts.

Dangerous enemies await the Oakwood heir, and even more dangerous allies: if Stephen cannot master his magic quickly and learn to distinguish friend from foe, his name may end up on the missing persons list, just like his father.

Enjoyed it but the pronunciation of Sigl annoyed.

Enjoyable enough story, likeable main character but, oh boy, I nearly stopped listening when the spamming of the word Sigl started.

Pronounced siggle, I was convinced it ought to be sigil (pronounced sijil.) I looked looked at the pdf and saw the spelling and tried to accept it. I managed to get through the story and enjoyed it.

Mr Jacka can you clarify the pronunciation please, sigil makes much more sense.

Good pace of story and great narration

Took a bit of a punt downloading this book but so glad I did. The pace was good, I felt I could immerse myself in the world easily and the narrator really helped with that which is important to me with an audiobook. Looking forward to reading/listening to Book 2 in this series

Jacka back on form

For those mourning the end of the Alex Verus series, this is a real consolation: a new hierarchical 'magic world' set in London (of course) with nasty, supercilious adversaries and an outsider hero. Different rules but pretty much the same game - in other words. Gildart Jackson, who read the Verus series so brilliantly, is a tough act to follow but Will Watt is doing pretty well so far. I really enjoyed it and will be waiting impatiently for the next in the series.

Magical world story of the good and really bad

Excellent story of the unknown magical world of the good and bad. Especially when you are wanted by both sides with everyone wanting ultimate power.

Wow

Wow, like really wow. This is the first book. I’ve read from this author and I will definitely be reading the rest of what he’s written If this is the kind of thing, I’ll be looking forward to it. And the funny thing is, I was ready to discard this book after the first paragraph of the first page, simply because I don’t really like to read things set in the present day usually, but this book certainly didn’t disappoint. In fact, I hardly put it down at all from the time I finished that first page right up until the end of the book. Looking forward to the sequel.

Another Magical Series Begins!

Wow! Another winner from Benedict Jacka. His stories never fail to make me see the familiar London streets in a whole new light, it’s going to be tough waiting for each new instalment!

premise full of potential but lacks as a story

I have to agree with some of the other reviews here, this book would have been better positioned as a 'part 1' of a longer story. the protagonist is likeable, other characters are all a bit 2 dimensional. we have 10hours worth of explaining how the magic in this world works and not much else. "I made a sigl I found a well, i made a new sigl, i practised and made a new sigl, i needed an X sigl, so I made one". its a bit repetitive. the premise is great, believable system of magic, rich evil families with dark secrets, unfortunately, the potential never quite came to fruition for me and the plot is thin, not much actually happens. this could have been a couple of opening chapters of a more complex and rich story. I liked the magic realism angle and I liked it better than the Alex Verus books. I'm not sure if I'll go for the next installment.

Poor plot

The story was overly focused on how to make sigals rather than a actual story line. Feel like I wasted my time and it only got better at the end. I was very close to not finishing this. Disappointed.
