Summary

Quiet and soft-spoken, Kate Zook is the responsible eldest daughter in an Amish family and prides herself on fulfilling her role. Then, one fateful snowy night, she uncharacteristically speaks her mind - and unwittingly plays a part in a horrible accident.

Wracked by guilt over her role in the tragedy that left her brother David injured, Kate devotes herself to his care, going so far as to take on his chores in the fields. Even so, her brother’s resentment toward her grows, and David torments Kate, making her increasingly isolated life even more difficult.

Though Kate’s parents have emotionally withdrawn, someone outside the home takes an interest in Kate and notes her clear grief. Samuel, a local boy, has recently returned from a wild rumschpringe - the Amish term for exploring the wider world - and recommitted to his community. Intrigued by Kate’s gentle yet loyal ways, he begins to fall in love with her. But tensions rise as he refuses to put up with David’s rage. As Kate’s heart begins to stir and cry out for happiness, she must rely on faith to find forgiveness or risk losing out on love.

ok, morally more inline, good ending

Much better, morally inline as would expect from Amish. However, seemed much of the storyline was rehashed from her other books...the last few chapters were fresh and had a good ending, wrapping up the storyline.
The Narrator was great, both with the characters and inflections.

Good Story

While I enjoyed the story overall I found Kate to be rather annoying. To much over thinking on her part.

Lack of emotional intelligence so uncomfortable

The story was simple and sweet. The main character was overly beset with guilt and codependence. I imagine it wouldn't bother some, but it was so uncomfortable for me!

Touching story!

This was the second audio book by Sarah Price that I listened to and she just gets better and better. This story moved me in so many ways and I loved the way Sarah weaves in the Christian faith into her stories. This one was so sweet! I loved Samuel and Kate and would like to see a future story about Kate's brother David (maybe there already is one?). I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a story full of depth and emotion.

Just okay

I just couldn't give this book 5 stars because David blamed Kate for his accident and more. It was just ridiculous because she actually believed it and nobody would stand up to David and tell him that he and he alone is responsible for his actions.
I am in a wheelchair and I can tell you that it gives you no right to be mean and belittle people. Also, people don't need to be afraid to speak up and let that person know their behaving badly. Even though we have a disability we're still human and it's okay to call us out.
