Story
John Whicher is a US Marshal, not long out of training - barely 12 months back from serving in the Persian Gulf war. In south Texas he's working his first case when a multiple shooting on the US-Mexico border leaves five undocumented immigrants and one American dead. The county decides to limit any inquest - money's tight, deaths among undocumented immigrants are notoriously hard to crack. But Whicher, in his first case, is not about to see justice denied.

Narrator Issues
I think I will read it on my kindle, to see if I can make any head or tail of it The narrator is the issue, a southern bore, no change of of narration for any of the characters, sounds like a poor mans Clint Eastwood, awful, Although I am sure there is a good story there

A great listen and a great story!
I enjoyed this book very much. The story was interesting and the characters and their flaws were well written. I loved the narrator. He did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. It kept me guessing as to how it would end.

Wasted Credit
Narrator speaks in an annoying whisper. It is impossible to hear him unless you are in an absolutely quiet place. Every other word is an obscenity. This foretells s writer with a limited vocabulary who hopes cussing will mask his inabilities. Sure wish I could get my credit back.

Protagonist?
The Whicher character, series namesake, was not developed well at all, and the moral ambiguity he felt about Gil et al was more inconsistent than ambiguous The Gil character was far more interesting but I had a hard time with the justification for his actions—lots of people go to war, not many use bank robbing for justice or redemption The performance was above average but rather emotionally flat, even considering the main characters were even keeled by description But the Texas background was great, as were the action sequences and gun detail I’m ambivalent about trying the 2nd Whicher book —any help on whether I should try it?

An Excellent Audio of this Thriller !
An excellent audio of this thriller with a great plot, fantastic characters, and a wonderful location. The story is well told, fast paced, and holds the reader's attention. A real page turner with unique dialog. I highly recommend both the ebook and the audio version of this story. I received a copy of the audio from the author and chose to write this review. Purchased the ebook for my collection.

Narrator's voice appropriate for this story
This is the first audio book I have listened to. I enjoyed it and the narrator's voice was appropriate for the story. His voice is deep with a Texas accent. He spoke slowly but fast enough to keep the story rolling along. I could understand who was talking when there were conversations. This audio book was very relaxing to listen to. This is an interesting story set in Texas desert country.

An American Outlaw: The Whicher Series
The story was pretty good, and I liked that the Marshall saw the overall picture, but the narrator had such a monotone voice that the listener couldn't tell who was involved in any particular part of the story. All the listener had to do was miss a couple of words. The droning voice made sleeping easy.

Can't get enough of this series.
I don't write many reviews. Only if, I truly get into a book. Love the narrator, the deep, West Texas sound. It takes me right back to Texas. I prefer to listen to the audio. My eyes are not what they used to be. I own all the books in this series, wish they were all in audio with this narrator.

Not For Me
I thought I'd try this series as it was advertised as for fans of John Sanford. Not even close. As the story progressed I listened only because I'd gotten that far into it but it was not my cup of tea. While the narration probably did represent Texas drawl it was completely impossible to figure out who was speaking. All characters sounded exactly the same, Whicher is not it the same category as Davenport, Flowers, Beaumont, Reacher, et al. Those characters exude action, Whicher just kind of plodded along to the end. Honestly, I'm not even sure exactly how the ended or what was accomplished. I don't expect to continue the series.
