Summary
Voller Sehnsucht erwartet Alkmene die Rückkehr ihres Gatten Amphitryon aus dem Krieg. Endlich angekommen, verbringt sie eine berauschende Liebesnacht mit ihm - nicht ahnend, dass es der Gott Jupiter war, der sich ihr in Gestalt ihres Mannes näherte. Als am Morgen der echte Amphitryon eintrifft, weiß dieser nichts von der gemeinsamen Nacht - und zweifelt an der Treue seiner Frau. Auch Alkmenes innerstes Gefühl ist erschüttert - nie würde sie den geliebten Ehemann betrügen! Erneut gibt sich Jupiter als Amphitryon aus, Gott und Mensch stehen sich in gleicher Gestalt gegenüber. Alkmene soll schließlich bezeugen, wer der echte Amphitryon sei. Mit ihrem vieldeutigen "Ach!" endet ein verwirrendes Spiel um Wahrheit und Täuschung.
