About this listen

FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016

This was to be her last day alive. The renowned criminal psychologist Ira Samin prepared her suicide thoroughly. The death of her eldest daughter had weighed too heavily on her conscience for her to carry on and she yearned for one last drink to raise a toast to oblivion. Her morbid plans are interrupted and she is called in to negotiate a gruesome hostage situation at a radio station where a psychopath is playing a morbid game.

While the show is on air, he calls people from the phonebook at random. If they pick up the phone with a certain slogan, a hostage is set free. If they don't, then the hostage is unceremoniously shot. The man threatens to continue playing this game until his fiancée arrives at the studio. The only problem is that his fiancée died several months ago....

This isn't bad, that's for sure. The quality cast give it their all and it's a fairly entertaining way to spend 8 hours. That's actually longer than the average full cast production has tended to be too so it represents good value for money. The production values are high and the acting is good enough. But . . . it did feel a little over-dramatised at times and the succession of Aha! moments as a series of characters outlined their hidden motives and shocking plans did grate a little.

I'm a big fan of the efforts that Audible are going to with full cast productions as a supplement to traditional audiobooks but this one doesn't hit the heights of some of their other efforts and is good rather than great.

So maybe the title is missing an I . . . and rather than AMOK it should say I AM OK (but not great).

I absolutely, totally and obsessively enjoyed every single second of this audio book. I rarely review books here but this is an exception. The voices, characters, story was fantastic, addictive and unexpectedly so great I found it full of surprises, unpredictable and immensely enjoyed every single word. Thank you to the author and more importantly the translator. I love books and am very hard to please and impress. I have my favourite authors and decided to try this book. Worth the credit, the listen and how you start asking yourself questions without even realising. Realistic and enjoyable which I will listen to again. Love the story, exciting plot and a great escapism. All I love in a book. I hope you enjoy this too and that you have a great psychological experience.

I hope this helps.

Epic, brilliant and a real pleasure

Where does Amok rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was a good performance with an original plot.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I found them all believable and cannot choose.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

This had great immediacy as a drama that would have been missing if simply narrated.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Breakfast Radio to start your day with a Bang!!

Any additional comments?

Very enjoyable but got a little confused towards the end of the production. I would listen again.

Suspenseful but a little muddled
