About this listen
Quito Cruz is a genius piano player and composer with Broadway dreams, but he’s not quite there yet. The problem is that, ever since that night in college, his inspiration—pretty-boy jock Emmet Aoki—has been completely MIA.
Now Quito’s dad wants him to put on a charity performance in his hometown. And there’s one hella big string attached: convince Emmett—now one of Hollywood’s hottest celebrities—to perform.
It’s all shaping up to be the biggest musical fiasco of Quito’s life. Especially when Emmett agrees to attend, and Quito realizes that the undeniable vibe between them is stronger than ever. Because there’s nothing simple about falling for a movie star . . . even when he’s pitch-perfect.

Critic reviews
With a relatable queer protagonist, this uplifting book portrays the power of owning one’s truth. Heartfelt, poignant writing and iconic supporting characters boost Quito’s story. The friends-to-lovers trope is wonderfully accomplished, full of sweet yearning and perfect harmony."—Library Journal (starred review)
"Fun and effervescent.. There’s a lot of promise in Lim’s debut...with its dual-timeline storytelling, charming cast, and love of show tunes."

I always like to discover new (to me) authors.
This book was not one I would automatically pick up due the the musical/ choir characters in there.
But reading romcom, rekindled friendship (well try) to reconnect with an old crush and best friend Emmett who is now a hearthrob, charity performance to be streamlined had me.
Quito is a great pianist and composer, who his dad asks him to help him out with the high school performance since he can't anymore due to his health.
During the story we find out what happened 'then' and what is happening 'now' for Quito. In the now we also discover more about some fabolous characters, I don't dare call Ujima a side character and Quito his dad is a huge part as well.
Be prepared to have your heart cracked in some parts, by misunderstandings in younger years. Loss of a character and previous losses. On the flipside to let your heart heal by all the joy, being proud, being out and finding the spirit to choose you in the way that fits you.
The note at the end who inspired Dominic for all the characters was a nice touch as is de pdf with songlist and more info. I can totally see this in a musical form as the author hopes for. I would buy a ticket when and if it appears in Europe.
The voice work by Aaron J. Albono was next level. I can't call it narration, because it is so much more. It took me by surprise when various voices and signing & piano play came into the book. I will for sure be o the lookout for more work by this artist.
All around this is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to in a while and it will be a repeat listen for me.
What an excellent surprise
