An OK listen. Nice to hear from a child’s perspective, but it all felt a bit pointless in the end

This was so beautiful narrated by the child. With serious issues of mental health, grief and much more intertwined into the story. Definitely worth a listen.

Not sure how well this book works as audio version. The whiny little girl narration was profoundly irritating and frustrating. The child was only six and the author did a great job of inhabiting her innocent point of view but it was not enough to examine the serious topic of schizophrenia. Imaginary friends, saints, angels and ghosts all got a bit much. Another voice showing the story from a gritty adult perspective would have added depth. I lost sympathy for the child and just wished she would shut up. The book seems to endorse this magical thinking/religious mania and the ending was unrealistic and sentimental. The fact is, children of mentally ill parents often suffer trauma for the rest of their lives due to the neglect they’ve experienced and it’s not all resolved with a sparkly picnic.
