About this listen

I am the daughter of a duke!

Elizabeth Bennet could scarcely credit the news when a letter sent to her father, from relations she did not know existed, informed them that untimely and unfortunate events would result in Mr. Bennet inheriting the dukedom of Everard. In the blink of an eye, the Bennets' lives are transformed - Elizabeth and her four sisters are wealthy, titled, and the talk of the ton.

At Pemberley, Fitzwilliam Darcy is still stinging from Elizabeth Bennet’s rejection of him at Hunsford when he learns the extraordinary news. Elizabeth Bennet - now Lady Elizabeth - has been elevated in an extraordinary fashion and is soon to become the most sought-after lady of the season.

But Darcy’s heart still belongs to her, as much as it ever did, and he sets off for London determined to win her hand. But can he prove to her that he has changed, particularly when her entire life has just altered?

This Pride and Prejudice variation is a novel-length tale using the characters of Jane Austen in a story of the author's imagining.

This is not the best writing of this genre but it is fun and is that not why we read or listen to audiobooks? I enjoyed it and will listen to it again.

Delightful escapism

Yes it was quite a nice story but nowhere near any angst and the villains were a bit one dimensional. Also the idea that the eldest daughter occasionally Duke would be marrying the son of a tradesman is ridiculous. Her marrying Newbury would have been much more likely and I assumed that was the reason for his characters introduction.

Nice upending of social status

The story is predictable and contains scenes that could have been written more compactly without losing any of the richness of the story.

The narration contains some weird pronunciations. The intonation sometimes does not fit the sentence, as if the narrator does not understand what she is reading. On occasion the voices used for the dirrerent characters fall out of character, which makes it hard to know who is speaking.

middling quality

An interesting variation on P & P. I particularly liked that elements of the Jane Austin original were built on and referred to without too much retelling. The worn out story of Wickam’s perfidy being an example. New characters introduced were believable and fitting to the genre.
I did not enjoy the narration
particularly in the portrayal of Mr. Darcy. The brilliant Stevie Zimmerman and the masterful Harry Frost are difficult acts to follow. I would like to hear read by either of these.

A Turn of Fortune

Interesting premise - the Bennets become titled and wealthy. Mild peril as baddies try to come between Darcy and Elizabeth. Most of this book was Darcy pursuing Elizabeth, proclaiming how perfect she is and how much he adores her. It got a bit repetitive after a while. Narrator is OK, I don't like her Elizabeth voice - E sounds a bit wet and feeble - not the witty, determined Elizabeth we like.

An OK but not outstanding variation
