Summary
From car mechanic to internationally loved opera, musical and recording star: the story of Alfie Boe....
Alfie Boe is the first official bad boy of opera: a musical superstar celebrated not only in Britain, but worldwide. This is the story of his life - the ups and the downs, from finding fame to losing his father - and, essentially, of his love affair with music.
Raised in Lancashire, the youngest of nine children and with a father who played opera at home, Alfie's story is not typical of most musical stars. His dreams of singing were only ever going to be dreams until fate intervened in the form of a stranger: he was training as a car mechanic when a customer overheard him singing and told him about a London audition. Alfie tried out, got the part and has never since looked back.
This is the tale of how Alfie went from car mechanic to the UK's most popular and well-known opera star, lauded by Baz Luhrman, Cameron Macintosh and Michael Parkinson as the best tenor we've produced in a generation.
Now, for the first time, he has granted his millions of fans an intimate glimpse into the life of the man they adore.

Good, but could have been better
What did you like most about Alfie?
The story of his background and his upbringing was very moving. It helps you to understand his motivation.
What did you like best about this story?
I think his relationship with his Dad, although his time on the street was a big surprise
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Andrew Wincott?
Alfie himself. That was the big let down for me. I think these type of books should always be read by the person themselves. If Barak Obama has time ......
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
His story of his father's death. I actually cried.
Any additional comments?
Re-record it yourself Alfie.

If this was ice cream it would be vanilla
This review is a straight up biography and is worth a listen if you like Alfie Boe. It doesn't have any amazing tell all truths and it won't set your heart on fire with passion or any emotion too much. It is a welcome change from the usual celebrities who tell us all about their shocking exploits. So as the title says its a bit vanilla but there is nothing wrong with that!
