About this listen

The People of Traenah faced a terrible disaster. The comet was coming. It would certainly strike at a predictable time and place. There could be no question about that. The immutable laws of the universe demanded it.

The approaching cataclysm silenced wars and joined bitter enemies together to find a way out. A way to somewhere else. Anywhere, else, where they could survive.

Amid this crisis, hard science and mystical religion battled for the soul of a modern society. Some chose to escape certain death, others to embrace it as a moment of supernatural transformation.

The sudden appearance of a strange alien offering rescue only served to harden their resistance.

Xenophobic, and warlike, they would prove an unusual challenge for the Fleet.

And David Powell's first cruise in command of Onizuka would not go at all as he had planned.

The people of Traenah must confront an impending comet strike. Although many are not saved from the impact, I wonder if Earth would do quite so well. And while these people are portrayed to be xenophobic, I do wonder if Earth might not respond with worse given the same situation.

Better than Earth

Interspecies diplomacy in all its complexity. Where is that universal translator when you need it?

Excellent

This is not just space opera but a thoughtful exploration of encountering a race which is xeonophobic and trying to avoid a conflict. We finally get to meet the Deus ex Machina of the Guardians/Shepherds/Trustees referred to in the previous novels and learn that the Pre-eminent were not the descendants of pre-Chixulub dinosaurs rescued before the cataclysm but dinosaurs who survived (like the birds - hence the purple turkey comments when first encountered) but who were removed to allow the rise of homo sapients.

Excellent continuation of the ISC Fleet series

it is supposed to be a book series about space exploration and combat. I have it at 3 or 4 chapters worth of good story and the rest is all word salad.

the first 9 chapters could of been condensed into 2.
