Summary

She's practically perfect in every way!

After being nearly killed by both a hired hit man and her former secretary, Agatha Raisin could use some low-key cases. So when Robert Smedley walks through the door of her detective agency, determined to prove that his wife is cheating on him, Raisin Investigations immediately offers to help.

Unfortunately for Agatha, Mabel Smedley appears to be the perfect wife: young, pretty, and a regular volunteer at church. But just as Agatha is ready to give up, Smedley is poisoned with weed killer, leaving Mabel, the prime suspect, to inherit a fortune.

With no one left to pay her, Agatha has to drop the investigation . . . that is, until her old friend Sir Charles Fraith turns up again to rekindle her curiosity in the case.

A very pleasant listen

I listened to this audio book on a whim as I couldn't get the book from the library. I am slightly Agatha Raisin obsessed at the moment. Don't ask me why I don't know the answer. She often exasperates me and the writing can be slightly repetitive and yet I still can't stop. I just love them, they are almost cosy?!?

With regards to this audio book...it made me laugh out loud on several occasions. Penelope Keith's "voices" and the way she portrayed Agatha was pretty much spot on for me. I would thoroughly recommend it and look forward to listening to more of these (despite having read the books) as Penelope Keith really does add another dimension. Wonderful, none taxing relaxing and just plain marvellous.

Twists and turns and fun!!

Except for Penelope Keith’s derogatory and inaccurate foreign accents, Beaton’s Agatha Raisin saves my day any day!

More gentle nothing much happens

I listen to AR before I go to sleep. Better than a Nytol! The stories are so formulaic but Penelope Keith's dreadful accents are actually growing on me

good feel of murder in a Coxwold village

The story is good, a "gentle" murder mystery. I did see the TV series first then read the books, now I'm listening to the audiobooks. I think it's just me, but I found listening to Penelope Keith difficult. Her voice seemed to be the same no matter which character she was playing - unfortunately this spoilt it for me

Too many Americanisms

I don't know if it was an editing decision (for US sales) or written that way originally but there were far too many Americanisms in this one. The cast of characters are supposed to be English in a rural English setting, yet use common American English terms such as 'garbage', 'trash', 'flannels' and 'Autopsy'. There were so many of them, it was distracting. The lack of attention to language actually used by native speakers is jarring.

The story follows the same AR cosy crime trajectory, no alarms and no surprises and is enjoyable enough, despite its thinness.

An Enjoyable novel

This is the second time I have listened to this book. The first time was many years ago. Infact I had forgotten I had already listened to it many years ago. However the second time was a delight. I love Penelope Kieth narrating these books. These are great comfy detective stories, I love them. Recommend this book
