Story
The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world...or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth.

Story
In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy.

War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. Summary
“A new series that promises to be just as engrossing [as Frontlines]…the action just as exciting, the science just as solid, the tension just as high. I gulped down the first book in a day, and I am already eager for the next one.” --George R. R. Martin
Across the six-planet expanse of the Gaia System, the Earthlike Gretia struggles to stabilize in the wake of an interplanetary war. Amid an uneasy alliance to maintain economies, resources, and populations, Aden Robertson reemerges. After devoting fifteen years of his life to the reviled losing side, with the blood of half a million casualties on his hands, Aden is looking for a way to move on. He’s not the only one.
A naval officer has borne witness to inconceivable attacks on a salvaged fleet. A sergeant with the occupation forces is treading increasingly hostile ground. And a young woman, thrust into responsibility as vice president of her family’s raw materials empire, faces a threat she never anticipated.
Now, on the cusp of an explosive and wide-reaching insurrection, Aden plunges once again into the brutal life he longed to forget. He’s been on the wrong side of war before. But this time, the new enemy has yet to reveal themselves...or their dangerous endgame.

all setup and no payoff
what? that's it? where's the other half of the book?! Luke Daniels is fantastic as always but the book is all set up. it finishes so abruptly that I thought I'd skipped ahead chapters. I love Kloos' frontlines series and this has a lot of great similarities but it's all set up and no pay off.

You always have a choice.
As an already dedicated fan of Marko Kloos from his excellent Frontlines series, I had great expectations of Aftershocks, and was not disappointed. The book introduces characters and sets the scene for a new science fiction space opera which will depend on the qualities of the people and their available weaponry to win their battles, not some arcane form of magic to save the day. It is set some five years after the galactic war, started, and lost, by the Greshians and the reader first meets main protagonist Major Aden Robertson, an about to be released prisoner of war officer of the losing side who, ironically, had never fired a shot in the war instead having been a translator. His Rhodian captors had been generous hosts, accruing for their prisoners the basic wage monies paid for the work done during the five years captivity, as well as feeding and housing them adequately, so release saw Robertson leaving with money in his pocket. But unrest is coming, strange attacks are happening. War is returning to the galaxy and several other protagonists are also brought into the picture. This has all of the makings of another excellent series and again is performed by Luke Daniels, who is so good at bringing even greater life to already well formed characters. The settings are in place, vividly pictorial, and the characters presented in living reality. Now all that is needed is book two.... And that is the only downside. Mario Kloos writes with great skill. And in his immaculate care, the new books are slow to arrive. So prepare for a wait before the series continues, but buy this book now. It is worth the frustration.

Half a book
This is not a science fiction novel so much as a novel that takes place in space, and the situation is very obviously based on Germany between WWI and WWII. As other reviewers have said, it's only part of a book. I don't mind if a series has an over-arching story, but dammit, each book should also have a complete story of it's own. The focus shifts between 4 people, which I always find disconcerting, but at least each chapter clearly distinguishes who it's about, and 3 of the 4 storylines are converging when the book just - stops. I bought this because I have enjoyed the Frontlines series, but I am seriously thinking about returning it.

Great setup for a series, but a bit short
I typically prefer to wait until the 2nd or 3rd installment of a series before I start one. It gives me a chance to really dive into a story while getting an idea of how committed the author is to continuing the series. I broke that convention when picking up Aftershocks because I wanted to see what exactly was holding up for so long the next installment of my beloved Frontlines series. Well it turns out Kloos does it again. In Frontlines he's very good at taking a large scale story but driving it through the main character. But unlike Frontlines, The Palladium Wars introduces you to multiple main characters, each with very unique backgrounds and personalities. Through them the book does a fine job of world building a relatable but still fresh feeling setting that is a fertile ground for storytelling. I love smart and inventive science fiction that still feels grounded and Kloos is the best at it. For all this I give the overall book 5 stars, but I still have one serious gripe. Throughout the world building you see hints of the greater story ready to unfold, building the mystery to be revealed. And then the book just ends. No big reveal, no climax, just a few moments of minor excitement and "Audible hopes you've enjoyed this program". I literally yelled "What? That's it?" at my car speakers it was so sudden. I know the saying is "leave them wanting more" but you've got to give us more to work with. Without it this is more a prologue to the main story than it is a stand alone book. Yes, the setup is so good I can't even dock it a single star because of the abrupt ending (edit: changed my mind, knocked story to 4). But I'm really wishing I stuck to my convention and waited for more to be released before starting this because it's going to be a long, long wait before I get to see what the real story is about.

Another Space Opera
I have read a few of Kloos’ books. This is a new series so I decided to start it and see if it is worth following. I have found Kloos to be an excellent writer with a creative imagination. The book is well written. There are four different main characters and the story switches back and forth between them. The four characters are: a newly released POW soldier; an angry racist soldier; a young vice president of a corporation, who is the daughter of the founder of the company; and a freighter captain. It is many years after a major war. Is a new war starting or a revolt and who is the new enemy? I am looking forward to the next installment. The book is nine hours and nine minutes. Luke Daniels does an excellent job narrating the book. Daniels is an actor, writer and audiobook narrator. He has won thirteen Audiofile Earphone Awards and was nominated for three Audie Awards.

Money grab! First half of a book
This was a good story but felt like it was half way through. Didn’t really get to know any of the characters. Kloos got sucked in at writing a shorter story for audio books. Won’t be listening to the next one. Cutting my losses. I hope Kloos will return learn from this one and never return to this shorter format.

A good story but buyer beware
I've read all of the books in the ongoing FrontlInes series. Kloos is able to create believable worlds and engaging characters and write great battle scenes. Unlike some other military sci fi authors, he doesn't over-describe technology but incorporates into the worlds he creates. But it was with some trepidation that I bought Aftershocks, the first book in a new multi-book series, the Palladium War. Why trepidation? Because Kloos hasn't shown me he can satisfactorily finish a series. There are six books in the Frontlines series plus some short stories. I've devoted years of my life to this series. And it shows no signs of ending or being anywhere close to a resolution. And now we have a new series, and book 2 isn't scheduled for release until July, 2020. the pace of Aftershocks is leisurely; Kloos is using this book to set up the story and introduce us to the characters. Fine. The story looks like it could be interesting and engaging. I plan to buy the next book in the series. But will the series end? I don't want to get suckered into investing my money and, more importantly, my time into a new series that will go on and on and never end. so buyer beware!
