Summary

“A new series that promises to be just as engrossing [as Frontlines]…the action just as exciting, the science just as solid, the tension just as high. I gulped down the first book in a day, and I am already eager for the next one.”—George R. R. Martin

Across the six-planet expanse of the Gaia System, the Earthlike Gretia struggles to stabilize in the wake of an interplanetary war. Amid an uneasy alliance to maintain economies, resources, and populations, Aden Robertson reemerges. After devoting fifteen years of his life to the reviled losing side, with the blood of half a million casualties on his hands, Aden is looking for a way to move on. He’s not the only one.

A naval officer has borne witness to inconceivable attacks on a salvaged fleet. A sergeant with the occupation forces is treading increasingly hostile ground. And a young woman, thrust into responsibility as vice president of her family’s raw materials empire, faces a threat she never anticipated.

Now, on the cusp of an explosive and wide-reaching insurrection, Aden plunges once again into the brutal life he longed to forget. He’s been on the wrong side of war before. But this time, the new enemy has yet to reveal themselves...or their dangerous endgame.

You always have a choice.

As an already dedicated fan of Marko Kloos from his excellent Frontlines series, I had great expectations of Aftershocks, and was not disappointed. The book introduces characters and sets the scene for a new science fiction space opera which will depend on the qualities of the people and their available weaponry to win their battles, not some arcane form of magic to save the day. It is set some five years after the galactic war, started, and lost, by the Greshians and the reader first meets main protagonist Major Aden Robertson, an about to be released prisoner of war officer of the losing side who, ironically, had never fired a shot in the war instead having been a translator. His Rhodian captors had been generous hosts, accruing for their prisoners the basic wage monies paid for the work done during the five years captivity, as well as feeding and housing them adequately, so release saw Robertson leaving with money in his pocket.
But unrest is coming, strange attacks are happening. War is returning to the galaxy and several other protagonists are also brought into the picture. This has all of the makings of another excellent series and again is performed by Luke Daniels, who is so good at bringing even greater life to already well formed characters. The settings are in place, vividly pictorial, and the characters presented in living reality. Now all that is needed is book two....

And that is the only downside. Mario Kloos writes with great skill. And in his immaculate care, the new books are slow to arrive. So prepare for a wait before the series continues, but buy this book now. It is worth the frustration.

Should really be called part 1. I enjoyed it but there is no real story. Am now buying part 2!

As part one of a series I enjoyed this book. It is not, however, a stand alone story.

My new fave genre

Until I accidentally came across this book, I had never given this genre one solid look. I accidentally clicked on this when I meant to click on another book and it said that I could read and listen for free, some thing I'd not seen before, so I shrugged and thought what the hell!!
What The Hell indeed!! I am now a new fan of this genre and I went back and bought the book and then the other two as well!!
Luke Daniels is a great narrator with a brilliant range within his bag!! I do have one thing to point out and it's some thing that isn't his fault and some thing he cannot change, but he really does try and that's being able to sound in any way female whatsoever lol. But his voice is as lovely as they come, it's just impossible for him to make the necessary changes in his voice to pass as female. There are narrators out there who can make their voice actually quite passable as being female, but it doesn't stop the enjoyment of this book. The great thing about Luke's range is the fact that he can do so many different accents and make them slightly softer that you quickly know which character he's voicing without doubt. Plus he's got a voice to make a woman swoon, so that's always a big plus in my book lol. Fantastic book and fabulous narration making it a truly wonderful experience book 2 Ballistic here I come woo hoo!!!

all setup and no payoff

what? that's it? where's the other half of the book?!

Luke Daniels is fantastic as always but the book is all set up. it finishes so abruptly that I thought I'd skipped ahead chapters.

I love Kloos' frontlines series and this has a lot of great similarities but it's all set up and no pay off.
