About this listen

“Scott, it's Rebecca. I need you.” After years of silence, Texan lawyer Scott Fenney receives a devastating phone call from his ex-wife. She has been accused of murdering her boyfriend, Trey - the man she left Scott for - and is being held in a police cell. Now she is begging Scott to defend her. Scott is used to high-stakes cases, but this one is bigger than anything he has handled before. If Rebecca is found guilty, she will be sentenced to life imprisonment. Her future is in his hands. As he prepares to take the stand in the most dramatic courtroom appearance of his life, Scott is forced to question everything he believes to get to the truth - to save the life of the ex-wife he still loves...

Critic reviews

"For my money, Grisham has grown stale over the past five years while Gimenez has gone from strength to strength…this is one of the best legal thrillers since Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent in 1987." ( Daily Mail)

The second in this excellent series. The storyline holds your attention, and the main characters are very likeable so it’s now onto book 3!

Good story and great characterisation

You cannot guess the outcome - excellent turn and twist keeps you listening right to the end.

Gripping

Not as good as "The Goveners Wife" which was a serious read. At times I thought I was reading a comedy & it did make me smile. On the whole I enjoyed this sequel to "The Goveners Wife"

Enjoyable

Ordinarily Jef Harding is a great narrator but, because I had listened to ‘The Colour Of Law’ immediately preceding this, it was jarring hearing how Jef pronounced some of the characters names (1 in particular), as opposed to how it was previously (& I assume, correctly) pronounced by Pete Bradbury. Especially given that the name was supposed to be French! It really grated on me and spoilt that aspect of the story for me!

Overall, the story was really engrossing - the ending was a shock! I am now committed to reading ‘The Absence Of Guilt’.

Great Story - Poor Narrator

Good story with great characters. Flowed really well kept my attention all the way through, to the court case. Narrator was good also through all 3 books. Looking for more books by this author
