About this listen

Recent breakthroughs in AI have not only increased demand for AI products, they've also lowered the barriers to entry for those who want to build AI products. The model-as-a-service approach has transformed AI from an esoteric discipline into a powerful development tool that anyone can use. Everyone, including those with minimal or no prior AI experience, can now leverage AI models to build applications. In this book, author Chip Huyen discusses AI engineering: the process of building applications with readily available foundation models.

The book starts with an overview of AI engineering, explaining how it differs from traditional ML engineering and discussing the new AI stack. The more AI is used, the more opportunities there are for catastrophic failures, and therefore, the more important evaluation becomes. This book discusses different approaches to evaluating open-ended models, including the rapidly growing AI-as-a-judge approach.

AI application developers will discover how to navigate the AI landscape, including models, datasets, evaluation benchmarks, and the seemingly infinite number of use cases and application patterns. You'll learn a framework for developing an AI application, starting with simple techniques and progressing toward more sophisticated methods, and discover how to efficiently deploy these applications.

It's a great book if you are working / studying the field of using foundational gen AI models to engineer features, helping you to better design and evaluate. The only issue I have is the audiobook format can sometimes be poor, for example in the book there will be a table of data, the audiobook attempts to read out this table but I find it very difficult to get any value from it as you aren't able to see and compare different values and instead youre just listening to a couple minutes of numbers being read out. There's also quite a few notable occasions where the narrator mispronounces words / terms and it was a bit distracting. Altogether reasonable and it's nice to have the audio format to ingest this knowledge whilst doing other things like gardening / chores that don't need much focus, but I think I will make an effort to revisit this book in ebook format.

Great book, some challenges with the audio format

Breath taking arrogancy and a book as a homage to American neo liberalism imperialism. The insinuation that the bigger the model will replace authors etc based on the size of the model is delusional.

Very Poor Read

I had to buy the book and read it. The notations and references read without comas or stops makes it impossible to follow. They should not be using an AI for these types of content. Different voices that break the content from the references and quotes would be necessary. Also leaving the references at the end of the explanation won't disrupt the line of thought.

Good book. Terrible audio book.
