About this listen

Devon, 1703. On the night of the Great Storm, the infamous smuggler Tom West confronts his lover, Grace, convinced she’s betrayed him to the authorities. After a violent encounter that leaves Grace dead and her cottage in flames, Tom flees, taking Grace’s daughter Molly to join his renegade crew.

As the years pass, Molly – now disguised as the young man Orlando – rises through the ship’s ranks, outshining the men around her. But Molly remains haunted by her mother’s death and the mystery that surrounds it. Driven by her need for answers and a desire for revenge, Molly strikes out by herself, intent on forging a legacy all her own …

Critic reviews

'Vividly imagined, relentlessly entertaining, rich and resonant in scope and context, it's both a thrilling adventure and a vital witness to women's voices.' (Emma Stonex, author of The Lamplighters)

A very well researched and informative historical novel that is written in such a way that completely captivates you - the characters and their stories live large .

Captivating

I liked that the author was trying to to bring women’s writing to life but I found the interleaving a distraction. I found some of the ‘Molly’ story demeaning and tacky. It also seemed filled-out with unnecessary detail.

Very frustrating read
