This book was recommended to me when I expressed a love for The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope. The tale of the escape of an English army officer and Moldovan princess from Bolshevik extremists through Europe in the dying days of the First World War is exciting and thrilling. Harry Phillips is the quintessential English debonair man of action typified by Buchan’s Richard Hannay or Hope’s Rudolph Rassendyll. His laughing manners and underlying serious determination clashes irresistibly with the tempestuous, passionate and feminine Princess Irena whom he has promised to take to safety in England. Both are gallant, brave and resourceful in the face of ruthless enemies and physical danger. The joy of the book is watching Harry trying to keep faith with his far-off fiançée and not fall in love with the princess who seems unaware how enchanting she is until we learn she is equally attracted to her audacious English protector and tragedy seems inevitable. A beautifully written and utterly romantic book, perfectly narrated.
