About this listen

Edward Enninful has lived an extraordinary life.

Here, for the first time, he shares the remarkable, inspiring story of his journey from a childhood bedroom in Ghana overlooking firing squads, to 1990s London - becoming the youngest-ever fashion director of i-D magazine at just eighteen years old. Now the first Black editor-in-chief of British Vogue, he has created game-changing images of everyone from Beyoncé to Meghan Markle, Kate Moss to Oprah Winfrey, Adele to Rihanna, and many more stars he now counts as friends.

A Visible Man is the story of a husband, son, brother, friend - and icon. Taking us from the neon thrills of Soho clubs to nights spent on friends' sofas, this is the story of Edward's phenomenal grit and determination: of failures, loss, coming out, joy, hedonism, fame, love, heartbreak, sacrifice, ill health and era-defining achievements. It's the story of one man's revolutionary mission to change how we see the world, showing how unwavering passion and perseverance can allow anyone to make their mark - just like he did.

Enninful tells this so well, like hes talking to a good friend. His life is a fascinating story. I naively thought that fashion was shallow and could have no real impact on the world - I was so wrong.

I savoured every word of Edward's truly remarkable story. Wow, what a trailblazer! I was awestruck at how he rose against the odds by sheer passion, hard work and dedication, defying deeply ingrained conditioning and despite devastating prejudice to make a meaningful difference. The feel-good ending would have been made even sweeter by knowing his father was sorry and very proud of him. Actions do speak but sometimes we need the comfort of actual words. Total respect to Mrs Enniful for making, moulding and inspiring such a creative force in Edward whose impact is profound. Thank you- I'm richer for hearing this encouraging tale of a life well lived xox

Want to know what it is like to be different, to "not belong", and to try to make it in a world closed to you? Edward's story will inspire. It is a potted history of black people making it through the eighties and nineties, and much of that was familiar to me. It is also a testament to those in fashion who value talent above all, bucking the trend, and without whose help Edward's journey would have been all the more difficult. This book had me reminiscing fondly and sometimes not so fondly about those times. It will make you laugh, and shout, and kiss your teeth. A pleasure to be read to by Edward himself. His language conjures vivid images of black life and fashion's inner sanctum in Africa, London and New York. His insightful description of the personalities he met and knew and loved on his journey - his family and his celebrity friends - made them my friends for the hours that he read to me. You want to cheer with them, cry with them. Worth it for more than just the fashion which was portrayed in interesting and colourful detail - the creative side, the business, and the people; I am glad to have spent a few hours in Edward Enninful's company, and to have learned a little more about him and his journey, and the journey of fashion from the eighties to today.

Edward's narration improves his story.
