About this listen

It's a lighthearted murder mystery ... with space aliens!

Gabriel Lake is a not so hard-boiled computer guy who finds himself swept up into a web of interstellar crime when he is recruited into the Galactic Detective Agency, led by the brilliant Oren Vilkas. Can a mere Earthling track a killer across the stars before more lives are lost? Can he negotiate his way around other worlds and understand the ways of extra-terrestrial cultures? Can he even figure out how to use a bathroom designed for aliens? And can he uncover the mystery of A Town Called Potato?

I adored every minute of A Town Called Potato by Gary Blaine Randolph. It’s a murder mystery that’s as light on the brooding as it is heavy on the charm, filled with lovable oddballs, space-age mishaps, and one hilariously reluctant Earthling trying to stay alive (and vaguely sane) in a universe that’s gone completely bananas.

What made this audiobook truly shine, though, was Tim Ratliff’s narration. He didn’t just read the story—he flung himself into it with such joyful commitment that it felt like a full-cast production. Every single character, from alien overlords to snarky sidekicks, was voiced with wit, warmth, and incredible variety. I kept grinning every time someone new popped up because I knew I was in for another perfectly performed personality. Honestly, I don’t know how he kept all those voices straight, but I’m deeply grateful he did.

There’s a real heart beneath the humour too—Gabriel may be in over his head, but watching him muddle his way through galactic diplomacy and alien bathrooms was unexpectedly endearing. And the mystery had just the right amount of twist, with plenty of unexpected detours and a satisfying payoff that made the journey well worth the ride.

Favourite quote:
“I’m not saying I’m qualified for interstellar detective work, but I did once figure out why the printer kept jamming.”
(Iconic energy. Hire him immediately.)

A brilliantly bonkers blend of cosy crime and cosmic chaos, given absolute life by a narrator who deserves all the awards. Smart, silly, and surprisingly sweet—A Town Called Potato is everything I didn’t know I needed. I’d follow Gabriel Lake anywhere… even to the ends of the galaxy.

A hilariously out-of-this-world whodunnit—performed impeccably

A great listen! A cross between Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Sherlock Holmes. A good story line with lots of twists and turns and some great characters. The narration was excellent with lots of good voices.

Loved it!

The storyline was just too absurd for me. I know it's about aliens on earth but the guy took it far too easy in his stride.
The narrator was way too over the top and his delivery. It made it impossible to listen to.
