Summary

Jerome Burnel was once a hero. He intervened to prevent multiple killings and in doing so damned himself. His life was torn apart. He was imprisoned, brutalized.

But in his final days, with the hunters circling, he tells his story to private detective Charlie Parker. He speaks of the girl who was marked for death but was saved; of the ones who tormented him and an entity that hides in a ruined stockade.

Parker is not like other men. He died and was reborn. He is ready to wage war. Now he will descend upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut and face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation and murder. All in the name of the being they serve. All in the name of the Dead King.

Brilliant

John Connolly just keeps getting better and better. Great story from the opening pages - kept me enthralled and wanting it to go on 'forever.' There were some humorous touches that I don't recall in previous books, which made me laugh out loud...each main character is fully developed and unique, and the blend is beautifully crafted into one homogenous whole...write on, Mr Connolly...can't wait for the next adventure.

The complexity of the story

The story line is always unpredictable and although good and evil clash in a cataclysmic fashion, there are still elements of humour from Angel and Lois.

John Connolly at his best

I have been a fan of John Connolly since I read his first book. His Charlie Parker novels never fail to keep your interest with interesting plots, believable characters and fascinating background information. They are crime fiction at its best and I love the darker elements which are strung through the plots. This latest book does not disappoint and upholds the tradition of the series. I would recommend this book to anyone (along with the rest of the series) who likes a good well thought out and well written book, which keeps you on the edge of your seat, and just when you think you have things sorted, twists and gets you going again. This is an exceptional book, in an exceptional series.

Connolly delivers another masterpiece.

Yet again Connolly has kept me enthralled with Charlie Parker. Jeff Harding has narrated to perfection. I recommend anyone who has not yet read or listened to this series to do so. A brilliant blend of suspension and the supernatural, including the charismatic duo of Louie and Angel. As always I am desperate for the next one.

This series just keeps getting better and better

This is everything you want in a Parker story. I won’t say too much as it has some nice twists and turns. All I can say is if you’ve gotten this far in the Series and read everything previous you will not be disappointed.

Charlie Parker just gets better and better!

John Connolly has been recounting the adventures of Charlie, Angel and the enigmatic Louis, for many years. It all started with Every Dead Thing and has continued (this is volume 14) apace, volume 20, The Furies is due for publication in August this year (2022). I can only say that most long running series get a little tired after 10 or 12 books, this is NOT most series and John Connolly's excellence continues to provide fresh, exciting adventures for Charlie and Co.

A really good read.

One of my favourite books it introduced me to John Connolly. I’ve red it twice and listened to it numerous times. The characters are as vibrant and vivid , the scenes as captivating as my first read. Well written and executed.
