About this listen

Given a chance at immortality, can Wu Ying grasp the fleeting opportunity? Long Wu Ying never expected to join a Sect or become a real cultivator. His days were spent studying, planting rice on the family farm and spending time with his friends. Fate, however, has different plans for Wu Ying and when the army arrives at his village, he and many other members of the village are conscripted.

Given the opportunity to join the Verdant Green Waters Sect, Wu Ying must decide between his pedestrian, common life and the exciting, blood soaked life of a cultivator. Join Wu Ying as he takes his first step on his Thousand Li journey to become an immortal cultivator. The First Step is the first novel in A Thousand Li series, a book on cultivation, immortals, wondrous martial art styles and spirit beasts and will be loved by wuxia and xianxia fans. The First Step is written by Tao Wong, the bestselling scifi and fantasy LitRPG author of the System Apocalypse, Adventures on Brad and the Hidden Wishes.

Critic reviews

“A Thousand Li is one of the best English-language cultivation series out there, written with obvious love for the genre. If you’ve heard about cultivation but don’t know where to begin, this is a great place to start.” —Will Wight, New York Times Best-Selling Author of the Cradle series

I was a bit skeptical about it at first, but it was really enjoyable!

My only wish was for easier to follow names for the characters.

Great story and Mr. Baldree delivers excellence, as always.

Unexpectedly good! Don't skip!

I found that I liked the main character, but disliked a lot of the other characters, and the whole fee reminded me a lot of Cradle. I know every hero needs a nemesis, but when there are so many people that you want to give a good slap, it gets quite tiring.

The story is a good one, with lots of fighting and progression, but for me at least there is too much focus on ‘cultivation’ and the constant mention of the flow of qi through meridians gets a bit too much. It is a cultivation story, but it seems like 50% of the story is talking about this and a lot of it could easily be cut out and you’d still be left with a decent story. I’ve listened to other stories which include cultivation and it is mentioned nowhere near as much.

All in all, I enjoyed it though, and it would be good to know how the story progresses, even with the MC being surrounded by short-sighted, ignorant, arrogant, petty nobles.

Good story

This series took me a while to get into after reading the cradle series and wanting something to fill the hole. Picked it up and then actually didn’t listen to it for a month or two, eventually I did I can confidently say one of the best progression fantasies I’ve every had the pleasure of listening too. Book 9 releases in a couple days and I can’t wait. This competes with the cradle series in my mind

Wasn’t sure at first but now I’m on book 8
