About this listen

Charles Darnay is a French noble falsely accused of treason. Sydney Carton is a self-loathing junior barrister enlisted to defend him. Between them is a shared love for the daughter of a former Bastille prisoner. Soon, their interlocking fates will be decided, as the French Revolution is ignited and the Reign of Terror begins.

Charles Dickens's belief in renaissance is borne out in this epic novel - as cities are overthrown and transformed, as cynics become selfless heroes, and as a "recall to life" becomes not only possible but necessary, for the individual and for society.

This wonderful adaptation of 'A Tale of Two Cities' (my second Audible download......I'm new to this) represented tremendous value for money. In the first few seconds I was not sure about the narrator's accent for such an English Classic, as to my own perception it seemed to have a southern United States drawl to it (akin to Samuel L Jackson), but within minutes I was sold by the skill imparted upon each characters' accents. This technique provides depth to the narrative and quickly has you flitting between the great cities of Paris and London in the late 1700s. Towards the climax of the book the nuances of the characters brought forward a great wealth of differing emotions from pity to anger, and left me reviling some of the main protagonists. My job involves a lot of travelling and it helped me wile away the hours, but mark my words when I say 'An Audio Book that can bring a trucker to tears by power of the words and the skill of the narrator...........is well worth a listen.' I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

The narrator's skill brings a multitude of characters to life.
