Summary

"He's a psycho." That's what Mike is told when he asks who the kid is with the dark swoop of hair and eyes that look like icebergs floating in milk. From that moment, it becomes Mike's mission to find out everything about this kid. The kid who can fight better than anyone, but doesn't want to. The kid who is the greatest artist Mike's ever met. The kid who only wants to be his friend during the lightest days of summer. The kid who tells him that being his friend at school will only ruin Mike's reputation. Regardless of what the kid tells Mike, he doesn't realize that summer is the best time - it has the most light - and it makes it easier for Mike to see who he truly is. And there's no way Mike will back off once he sees this kid for who he truly is.

A Surplus of Light.

Just a lovely story between two young men Mike and Ian, when they learn to know themselves and eachother.

The narrator Brian Lore Evans’s voice fits the story perfekt, thanks for lend it out.
The author Chase Connor is new to me and I’m looking forward to his other books.

Beautiful story

I was introduced to Chase Connor’s work through the excellent ‘Jacob Michaels Is’ paranormal gay romance series, and I’ve been keen to read his other books ever since.

A Surplus of Light (excellent title) is a beautiful coming of age story about Mike and Ian, two teens slowly falling in love over summers set by a creek in a small town, and it certainly did not disappoint.

Like Chase’s other books, the writing in A Surplus of Light, if it’s the interior monologues of the characters or the vivid descriptions of the setting, is competent and harmonious with a touch of the poetic. Characters are well realised, often adorable, and dialogue is authentic. The sweet, sometimes unrequited and painfully uncertain push and pull of youthful homosexual love and sexual attraction is depicted with skill and an understanding of the nuances of love and life.

I have read the ebook and listened to the audio version of this book, and both experiences are well worth your time. The narrator of the audio book does an excellent job with his softly spoken, almost monotone narration that really suits the tone of this story, which is told from the teenage characters’ perspectives.

I particularly love a scene at the creek with bat pups, which is a perfect example of the fruits of Chase’s beautiful imagination. This boy can write! Highly recommend this title, both in word format and audio.

Absolutely Beautiful!

The story hooked me in from the very beginning, opening with the boys sharing their last day at the creek and going back over to tell their story.

It is a wonderful story of first love which is told by the narrator so beautifully, I was completely immersed. The author's words had me filling up more than once, and the love these boys have for each other really shone through so openly, thanks to the stunning prose and wonderful narration.

If I could have given more than 5 stars, then I would have.

Loved it!!

“I’ve Always Been Able To See You”.

I am a reader and, as a reader, I enjoy the intimacy of being alone with the story and the characters. The voices of Mike and Ian were so distinctively clear in my mind, that I was loathe to hand over the reins to a different interpretation of those voices. So, when I heard that one of my very favourite books was being prepared in audio, I was very sceptical about whether I would enjoy it in its audio version. However, after listening to the astonishing narration of Brian Lore Evans, with his mellifluous rendering of Chase Connor’s beautiful prose, I was hooked. This wonderful coming-of-age story of the growing relationship of two boys falling in love, over five summers, held me in its grip even after four re-reads. It’s an unusual story, in that the boys’ relationship is pursued only in the summer months. Ian does not want to compromise Mike’s popular status at school with his own bad boy image, if they are seen as friends, so they meet only during the summer months. This frustrates Mike, but Ian is steadfast in refusing to compromise on his decision.
The narrator captures perfectly the essence of those dreamy days and nights, and the sweet agonising longing of first love, and Mike’s frustration. He wants so much more from Ian than just promises. Ian is unable or unwilling to give him more than that. Listening to the audio was almost like reading the book for the first time - the narrator managed to re-capture the magic that I felt when first reading it. Mike and Ian’s voices were distinctly discernible, and the narrator did a wonderful job with the secondary characters’ voices, too. If I could give this more than five stars, then I definitely would. This is an amazing story and has now become an amazing audio book. Get it, listen to it. You won’t regret it.
