About this listen

The first in a new regency romance series about two feuding families, and reunited childhood enemies whose hatred turns to love.

Maddie Montgomery’s family is in debt, and her hope rests on the rival Davies clan missing their yearly “pledge of goodwill", ceding the land that separates their estates. With Maddie’s teenage nemesis, Gryffud “Gryff” Davies, Earl of Powys, away, hope is in reach. But then Gryff shows up on a horse and is stunned that the tomboy he once teased is now a woman.

When Gryff and Maddie discover contraband on their land, they realize it can benefit both families. But they’ve also uncovered a dangerous plot, and they need to work together to get out alive. Soon their hatred for each other starts to feel more like attraction.

Kate Bateman brings crackling banter, steamy romance, and a dash of adventure into the first book in the Ruthless Rivals series.

Beverley A Crick's narration is always perfect in every way, and she was so here. The story was 4- stars good - predictable of course, but isn't every Regency romance? Still enjoyable. 5 stars overall.

Perfect narration, good story

This is my first Kate Bateman novel and it was really great listening. The sparring between the main characters Madeline and Gryff was fantastic and it’s clear they were evenly matched. Fantastic narration by Beverley A Crick was also a bonus as she captured all characters big and small and bought them all to life. 5⭐️

I really enjoyed this story!

It was interesting, had really fun characters.

There's a feud, both both families are loving.

Maddie & Griff made a wonderful team, who worked well together.

Their coming together made sense & the angst was kept to a bare minimum... just how I like :))

All in all, it was a nice little escape from reality & I'm really looking forward to reading the rest in the series!

A really enjoyable adventure

The language used on the book is not what one expects for the upper class language of the time. Yes kids are informal and use rude words but it just didn’t transport me to the right era. The development of the story is very good but then gets to the end and it was very disappointing how fast the storyline moves. Loads of interesting things left out including her father’s reaction and why would they still meeting at the equinox?

Good book but not excellent

Narrator should know that upper classes have never spoken in local accents. The hero of the romance sounding like a peasant has really ruined the story for me.

Poor narration
