Summary

Does love have a chance if she doesn’t play by the rules?

Lady Patience Kendrick was born to a life of privilege, and with the London Season looming, she finds herself facing unprecedented pressure to adhere to the rules of society. Unfortunately, the free-spirited young woman is anything but proper. Patience’s elder brother, a former military man, bemoans his sister’s antics - but when he accuses her of incurable frivolity, it is simply more than she can bear. Determined to prove her brother wrong, Patience undertakes a drastic experiment: She will disguise herself as a maid and demonstrate her ability to work as hard as anyone.

Taken on as household staff by her brother’s former general, Patience soon learns that willingness and ability are two very different things. While her plan sounded promising in theory, the reality is that she is out of her depth - and the irresistibly charming son of the house isn’t helping matters. Patience soon finds herself embroiled in a charade far more complicated than she imagined. With both her pride and her heart at stake, she is determined to prove her brother wrong - even as her plans spiral delightfully out of control.

Interesting all the way through

No sex scenes. Just interesting happenings all the way through. It held me Captive. I really love the book and would recommend it immensely. It didn't leave me feeling like there was something that should have been said or done at the end. I felt fulfilled. y duty I really like this author and hope there are more books like this to read from this author.

Enjoyable book

While I didn’t find a Proper Charade as entertaining as a Proper Scandal; I still found it to be a delightful story. The idea of a lady of society getting a job as a maid to prove herself was well thought out and the story progressed in a realistic direction. I would definitely recommend this book to friends and will likely read it again.

Clean romance, not the same old characters

This was an enjoyable clean romance. I enjoyed that especially the hero in the story was not the same old typical hero that regency romances tend to depict. I enjoyed the humor, and found the story itself to be interesting. I also liked the narration, which is so, so important in an audiobook

Charming Tale

Charming story read by an entertaining narrator. Enjoyed it immensely. If you want a clean romance, this is one that you will enjoy. It reminded me of the lovely, enlivening dynamic between Phineas Fogg and the Princess Aouda from "Around the World in 80 Days."

A Delightful Surprise

I’ve listened to a lot of historical and regency books, and it always seems they are either endless padding with conversational drivel to make the book long enough, or so full of ridiculous porn I have to eye roll and skip.

Imagine my delight in a fresh story well told that moved along fast enough to keep my interest, believable and flawed characters you could root for, and true romance.

Read Don't Listen

I adore this story! It is sweet and fun. Great characters and a great addition to the series. However, I am glad that I read the book before listening to it. The narrator does nothing for the story. The main character, Patience, is a free spirited girl but is read as if she was stiff and boring. Too many times I couldn't tell which character was talking, they all sounded the same. Most if the time the emotion was completely left out of the narration. My driving companion said, "I can see how this is a cute story, but the narrator is sadly lacking." I was even more sad to see the next book is read by the same person.

A great story and a great performance

Esther Hatch is one of my very favorite authors. I've read this story before but this is the first time I listened to the audiobook. Noah Wall always does a great job. It made me love the story and characters all over again. I highly recommend it.
