Summary

James Rolfe is an independent filmmaker and creator of the Angry Video Game Nerd web series and feature film. A Movie Making Nerd is a personal account of his origins, starting with an early love of making home movies before the rise of the internet and digital video. Rolfe candidly details moments of triumph and failure in both life and filmmaking—from his time in special education school and struggles during adolescence and college, to personal relationships, finding employment, and raising children. Every recollection in A Movie Making Nerd, whether happy, funny, or painful, shows how one might turn a childhood hobby into a life-long calling.

After watching all his videos there was still new things

I had watched so much on James. Been following him for years so wondered if this is worth my time. It totally is. There is so much new stuff he discusses that even if you think you won’t learn anything new about Hames or his journey you most likely will.

A pure treat to listen to!

I was very eager to listen to this ever since it came out and believe me, it's well worth it. Very engaging, kept me on edge at some points and it was enlightening to hear more about James' life. It was even better to hear James himself narrate it, he has a very natural way of speaking and it's very comforting to listen to. I'm not sure if he'll ever read this, but I do wanna say thanks to James for sharing these stories and I'm sure there's a lot more waiting for you in the future

A nice capstone to the Nerd

James Rolfe has had a huge impact on my interests when it's come to the internet, I've watched his AVGN videos since I was a child, and his trajectory as a filmmaker has served as a great inspiration for me.

This audiobook feels like a nice send off and tribute to that era, highly recommended for anyone who's even remotely familiar with his work. His thoughts on nostalgia especially I found almost profound, at the very least they resonated with me...

I only give 4 stars for performance as at times it's clear when the narration has stopped and a new session has begun, it's no big deal but I'd be lying if I said I didn't notice.

A MUST for any AVGN fan

Endearing, intimate and entertaining from start to finish! At first, I'll admit I had full respect for, but never really took enough interest into James' old cinema works to be sure if I wanted to buy the book (especially being on a tight budget). I was more than pleasantly surprised though at how engaging and fun it was to hear about it all. It truly gives you an insight on everything James has been through and his all too relatable struggles of everyday life as a kid into his teenage years and adulthood, as well as his battles with depression. I was already a big fan of the AVGN stuff for years now, and now I'm even more of a fan and will be checking out his old projects! Thanks for all your hard work, James! Lots of love.

Very interesting, well written and narrated

A great story that is well written and clearly narrated. If you have even the slightest interest in movies and movie making, you will probably enjoy this book. I could have listened for another 7 hours.
