Summary

"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

When Fitzwilliam Darcy spoke these words to Elizabeth Bennet as part of his marriage proposal, they expressed his concealed feelings completely, but their meaning was at odds with the rest of his prideful and arrogant offer of marriage. It was therefore rather easy for Elizabeth to reject his offer in much the same manner. But what if Darcy, never one at ease when trying to speak of inner sentiments, had realized beforehand how his intended proposal would sound to the young woman he hoped to make his bride? What if he had attempted a much more civil and thoughtful proposal of marriage? Could Elizabeth Bennet have coldly and angrily rejected an offer made in such a manner?

A Most Civil Proposal, a variation on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, examines and explores how the lives of the two main characters and their families and friends might have turned out differently had Darcy realized his error beforehand and thus avoided being so forcefully instructed and corrected by the love of his life.

Very Worthwhile read

Really enjoyable. Interesting story with a wonderful narration. Recommend to those that like a Elizabeth/Darcy variation. i enjoyed the fact the Story continues onto their early days of marriage.

Unnecessary bedroom scenes

Overall a good variation. But I would have been happier if the wedding night and beyond had been not so explicit, it spolit the gentleness of the story..

Good story, narrator a bit dull.

Plot was good (different, but not too different to original), characters reasonably true, but I found the narrator a bit dull. Not as bad as some, but a world away from the wonderful Stevie Zimmerman or Harry Frost.
Beware it has a few explicit scenes of intimacy between Darcy and Elizabeth, but they were tastefully done (if not particularly realistic) and I found I enjoyed being granted a few glimpses of Darcy and Elizabeth “behind closed doors”.

A wonderful retelling of the original

This original and respectful telling of the original story adds much to the enjoyment of the slightly expanded tale. Reordering of a few events adds to the credibility and pleasure to be gained from the narrative.

Enjoyable variation

I didn't enjoy the narrator's female voices and the sound effects. The story is gentle, well written and emotive. It's difficult to comprehend that the author is a husky, male, retired American engineer

Brilliantly done

A lovely story, enhanced by the narration with little touches such as background noises when people spoke which really brought it to life.

Amazing! a must read.

Couldn't turn it off. The sound effects really added to the story (sometimes I struggle as they detract but these were just the right number and level). wonderfully read. I was totally immersed.

Unexpectedly Steamy

I’ve heard P&P Variations by CP Odom before and, like those, this one is very well written with a nice twist or two in the tale. The sound effects add to the story and the narrator is talented. I recommend this to any JAFF lover, but, be aware this is NOT your G or even PG variety of JAFF. Other stories either elude to or flat out mention that both Lizzy and Darcy celebrate their marriage with both being either virgins or very inexperienced. It seems that this Mr. Darcy definitely knows a few things! It is not told in a crude manner, but it is absolutely for mature readers only.

A Big Letdown

Darcy's proposal and determination to marry Elizabeth was the best thing about this book. He was relentless in his pursuit. Unfortunately, the story itself was nothing unique. Mr. Bennet as an antagonist who champions Wickham without reason against Darcy only to hurt his daughter Elizabeth is jarring. The narrator has a good reading voice, but the droning quality kept putting me to sleep. The voices of the female characters were too deep . Overall, the voices were pedantic and sonorous. The musical interludes between scenes and chapters annoyed the senses and prolonged the time of the narration. The other sound effects added interest. Definitely not one of my favorites in any published format.

For mature audiences only!

I didn't like how the author painted Elizabeth or her father. Elizabeth did not act as I feel a new bride would have....more daring and rambunctious on their wedding night than even Darcy was. Her father was way out of character and Jane Austen's Mr. Bennett would never act so cruel. I didn't like the many sexual exploits being so detailed. If you want a clean romance, this is not the book you are looking for.

A wonderful experience with a surprise

Many time I have read this much beloved story, but this time with all the sound effects which a reader could wish for, and made the story come much more to life and if I might suggest become Colin Odom’s trademark for audiobooks in the future.

Darcy and all the beloved characters really came to life with the sound effects which have been put into the story, and which made the story more dramatic, surprising and interesting, than ever before! 🤩 And the narration was downright brilliant! Loved every minute! Can’t wait for future projects!

Congratulations on yet another wonderful experience Colin.

Would be much better reading than listening!

I bought audible version and have only listened twice. I have read this author and enjoy quite a few of the stories. However! The sound effects annoyed the heck out of me! I often listen to these novels using the text-to-speech function and have thought that I just might use that option re: this narrator and producer in the future. I like this author generally but not in the audible version. Just my personal opinion.

Good story occasional awkward narration

Really enjoyed story. The narration could be a little awkward in places & he doesn’t really change voices for different characters making it difficult to know when different characters are speaking; especially in dialogue without narration break. I don’t need to hear double the music to transition between chapters; I like that idea but not twice which made it very long. Generally really like the occasional sound effects for horses, door closing, etc. but it was a bit off putting to he him want to enact love scenes-he was not creating sounds majority of time so why then? Came off weird.

Loved it

I might have loved the epilogue the most. The story was original yet stuck to Jane Austin’s version enough.

Most enjoyable

Both the author and narrator have created a truly enjoyable variation. I’ll be listening to this again and probably again…

Great story. The audio was really more unique than other stories I’ve listened it. The background sound were also a unique touch too.

You could tell it was written by a man

Absolute insult to Jane Austen's memory. Boring and absurd, and at times flat out misogynistic. The narrator isn't bad though.
