Summary

Spoiled and ungoverned, Fitz was not suitable companion for a lady of fashion...

And certainly no proper chaperon. Fitz begged to disagree--after all, a dog was a true incomparable as far as friendship, loyalty, and protection - and soon lovely Miss Sonia was plucked by her rusticated roots and packed off, dog and all, to London. Perhaps there she would find a husband to tame her free-spirited ways - and keep her out of trouble.

Sonia, however, always had a soft spot for the underdog, and Darius Conover was such a fellow. Scorned by society for a scandalous deed, Conover was not redeemed even by his heroics in battle. Until he met Sonia and Fitz, two passionate souls undaunted by even the most odious circumstances - and decidedly determined to undo the shackles binding his heart.

well written story

Any additional comments?

where in alternate chapters fitz gives his thoughts on humans, other animals reasoning, and a bit of history.
lovely story where Sonia likes to get her way and charms the people in London on the party rounds.
stevie Zimmerman performed the story well. the soundtrack let it down a bit.

A Cute, Light Read; But Not Stupid

Would you listen to A Loyal Companion again? Why?

Yes, it's a nice kind of relaxing book that's very good for a car trip or pool-side.

What did you like best about this story?

That it was pleasant without being stupid. It's hard to find a book that's light and funny, but also well written.

What about Stevie Zimmerman’s performance did you like?

I liked her voices very much, I just wish the audio quality had been better. It varied, but was generally of sub-par quality. It also skipped a little here and there.

Any additional comments?

Lovely, funny little book. It's also quite clean, so I'd feel comfortable giving it to a precocious child or more conservative older person. I hope Audible picks up more from the author and voice actress. I just wish the audio quality was better.

A light, fun read

What did you like best about this story?

I am very fond of books where a dogs take part in the narration. They make me look at my dog differently. I am sure my behavior exasperates him at times.

Loved Fitz the dog's point of view

Would you consider the audio edition of A Loyal Companion to be better than the print version?

I read the book years ago and was very happy to see this book on audible. The audio just enhances the book. I have the book, audio, and Kindle versions - if I really like a story, I buy it in all the forms in which it is available.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Fitz the dog!!! I loved the comments from Fitz. For example, when Darius is looking for a kidnapped character, he comments to Fitz, "They have a good lead on us. Do you think you can find [the] coach in this mess, huh, Fitz?" And Fitz thinks to himself, "Of course I can. I peed on it [the wheel], didn't I?"

Which character – as performed by Stevie Zimmerman – was your favorite?

They were all good. I liked the way she used a lower class accent for Fitz.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I also listened to it with my sister whenever we were in the car.

Any additional comments?

I love Barbara Metzger's earlier books, like this one. I'd like to see her earlier books in audio form.

Witty, lovely, and full of love!

The Loyal Companion by Barbara Metzger is so stinking adorable, I can't even! Love this novella so much, the humor, the characters, Fritz the dog, everything was handle beautifully. Brief summary, Sonia who grew up carefree in the country is sent to London to her grandmother, for her come out. She's accompanied by her loyal companion, her dog Fritz. Sonia has a big heart, she's out to help the underdog and those in need and so she comes across Captain Darius Conover and his three nieces who are in dire need of a champion. With the help of Fritz, Sonia brings light and love to the Conovers. This could have been a silly story, as part of it is narrated by the dog, but it was done in such a clever and witty way that I found it charming and refreshing. Fritz is no ordinary dog. he a scholar and a philosopher, and he'll straighten his mistress' life come hell or high water. The romance between Sonia and Darius is sweet and touching. Sonia has lots of love to give and Darius is in need of someone to love and believe in him and so it's a match made in heaven. The character are all charming and lovable. This reminded me a lot of a Georgette Hayer novel, it's a similar style. The narration was done by Stevie Zimmerman and she was excellent, however, the quality of the recording wasn't great. Still, it didn't detract from the story.

Somewhat entertains just not quite grabbing

Story was not one that drew me to my phone at every waking moment as some others have in the past. No mystery and both were willing parties and submitting to the love. I need mysteries in my books that draw me in. Not knowing how the story would turn or one resisting the love etc. something to keep it interesting or the fizz disappears.

Such a unique point of view!

This didn't feel like the Barbara Metzger novels I had 'read' so far... and it took a while to get into it. However it was just as enjoyable and just as much fun... And so unique too.
As usual Stevie Zimmerman gives a stellar performance!

Great book!

Although there's plenty of story told by the humans, the dog's voice is the best!

Very Sweet

An entertaining old fashioned story. I enjoyed the dog addressing the listener. It is a clean story without being prudish.

Cute story, awful reader

Unfortunately this book was read by another reader & being returned. After suffering thru a third of the book, I couldn't take the narration any longer so I skipped to the last few chapters.
