this is set in two time periods, Andrew's present day and his past as a child up to training to become a doctor.. the change from one time period to the other can be abrupt leaving the reader/listener trying to work out what period you are in.it feels like the author has thrown everything into the mix, adultery, impotency, grieving, anger, illegitimate child with disability, unconventional family and near fatal accident.
there is very little humour or a strong character which are usually in her other books. a disappointment.
if this had been my first ruth Hamilton book I don't think I would have tried anymore.
