Editor reviews

This cherished children's tale follows young Sara Crewe, a well-to-do heiress sent to a London boarding school. Initially praised and pampered, Sara's fortunes take a turn for the worse when her father dies penniless, leaving her a destitute orphan. Sara endures starvation and mistreatment at the hands of her cruel headmistress, but is able to find respite through the power of her elaborate fantasies, as she creates a world where she'll forever remain a princess. Actress Rebecca Burns infuses Sara and her friends with playful, good-natured innocence, even as they endure misfortune and cruelty. With a performance sure to delight audiences young and old, Burns captures the magic and excitement of a child's imagination.

Summary

Sara Crewe, 10 years old, leads a delightful life. Her father, a British officer, provides her with all of the comfort his wealth and charm allow. When he dies, a cold-hearted schoolmistress turns Sara into a drudge. How does she cope?

Sara is unquenchable. Her father taught her that every girl is a princess, rich or poor. That gift, along with grace, spirit, and imagination, give her serenity and puts the fall from riches to rags in perspective.
