Story
Would you like to simplify your life, downsize, and become debt free? Then this book is definitely for you! Most of the things we own, we don't even pay attention to in our day to day lives. You must keep finding things around your home you see only once a year, and yet you keep finding them every spring cleaning. You clean them up, meditate a bit on the memories they bring back, and put them back in their secret place. Then you forget about them for at least a few months. And it's not just about the things we don't use daily. It's about the attitude, the desire to own so many things. It's a vicious circle we draw ourselves, and we keep following the line like our lives depend on it.

Story
If there is one thing that most of us aspire to, it is, simply, to be happy. And yet attaining happiness has become, it appears, anything but simple. Having stuff - the latest, the newest, the best yet - is all too often peddled as the surefire route to happiness. So why then, in our consumer-driven society, is depression, stress and anxiety ever more common, affecting every strata of society and every age, even, worryingly, the very young?

Michelle McGagh has been writing about money for over a decade. You'd think that would make her a whiz with her own cash, right? Wrong! Spending with abandon and ignoring bank statements were her modus operandi. Just because she wasn't in serious debt apart from her massive London mortgage, she thought she was in control. She wasn't. Something needed to be done ,but rather than cut back here and there, Michelle's approach was more radical.

Story
Personal Organizing Coach Marin Rose argues that we're all in a toxic relationship with our stuff and that we've got some serious thinking to do before we can expect to make lasting, positive change. In this book, she explores the common emotional barriers to people reducing consumption and ownership, from personal feelings of anxiety, guilt, and regret, to our faith in the omnipresent American illusion that stuff is a direct path to happiness.
Summary
Now more than ever, we live in a society where we covet new and shiny things. Not only has consumption risen dramatically over the last 60 years, but we are damaging the environment at the same time. That is why buying quality and why Tara Button's Buy Me Once brand has such popular appeal.
Tara Button has become a champion of a lifestyle called 'mindful curation' - a way of living in which we carefully choose each object in our lives, making sure we have the best, most classic, most pleasing and longest lasting - kettles, desks, pots and pans, scissors, coats and dresses, instead of surrounding ourselves with throwaway stuff and appliances with built-in obsolescence. Tara advocates a life that celebrates what lasts, what is classic and what really suits a person.
There are 10 steps to master mindful curation, and each is explained in this book, from understanding and using techniques to freeing yourself from external manipulations. Finding your purpose and priorities and identifying your core tastes and style. Learning how to let go of the superfluous and how to make wise choices going forwards.
Mindful curation is a lifestyle choice that will make you happier, healthier and more fulfilled spiritually as well as helping save the planet.

Disappointing
I was hoping that this book would provide inspiration for for living a more organised and frugal life. I liked the idea of ensuring you only have things you need and crucially only buy things that last.
However, the first half starts well with an explanation of how the author came to focus on this but drifts into an analysis of how companies advertise and persuade you to buy. Then at about chapter 13/14 she literally goes through every-single- item you would need to purchase to set up home and explains what the best options are including names of good brands.. I found myself bored and wondering if I had purchased the ‘which’ guide to household goods..
Ok if you are preparing your wedding gift list I suppose.
I stopped listening I’m afraid.
I suppose it depends what you want from the book. If you need to know what items last the longest and the best brand then this is perfect..

I wish I'd read this sooner
As a repeat offender for purchasing fast fashion, because it's cheap and I can change my look as often as the mood takes me, this book was a real eye-opener to the damage this kind of lifestyle can have on both my bank account and the planet itself. The one thing I truly loved about listening to this book was how much I could relate to Tara and her people-pleasing ways, especially when it came to partners before she found happiness in her own skin, and fell in love with a man who loved her for exactly as she really is. "If I buy this, I will be...." honestly, fill in the blank at the end with any selection of words, I've justified a purchase with this sentence more times than I would ever care to count.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to become a more mindful consumer, as well as wanting to learn more about themselves outside of whatever advertising suggests they should be. And Tara's voice is so lovely and quintessentially well-spoken. Honestly, I cannot recommend this audiobook enough, and will be restarting it again shortly.
