Summary

“The engagement between them is of a peculiar kind. From their infancy, they have been intended for each other. It was the favorite wish of his mother.…” (Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice)

Fitzwilliam Darcy was raised to never stray from the path set before him: Ensure the continued prosperity of his estate, Pemberley, protect and educate his sister to become an accomplished woman, and marry the woman his mother chose for him — his cousin Anne de Bourgh. With a letter bearing his late mother’s signature, Darcy presumes his fate is sealed and prepares to wed one he does not love. However, his destiny begins to unravel when he glimpses a pair of fine eyes on a quiet, country road.

Elizabeth Bennet is the second daughter of a respectable, though insignificant gentleman. She is flattered to have captured the attention of a local squire, a childhood friend, and everyone believes her path is secure — until a handsome, rich gentleman arrives at a neighboring estate. Happenstance begets the unlikely pair together, bridging a forbidden love long past a mere friendship.

In A Lie Universally Hidden, two of literature’s most beloved romance characters are destined to marry for fortune and obligation rather than love. How will Darcy and Elizabeth fulfill their true destiny under such circumstances? Shall honor, decorum, prudence — nay, a signed letter from the grave — forbid it?

A Lie Universally Hidden is a Regency Romance suitable for most audiences, teen and up.

If things had been different...

I really enjoyed this take on a story I know well and love. Although I’m not so sure that Miss Bennet would behave with quite this level of impropriety, it was interesting to hear how the story may have unfolded had Mr Darcy been a little less Proud, and Elizabeth a whole lot less Prejudiced. The story was beautifully read, and great fun to listen to.

Great twist on P&P and wonderful narrator

I enjoyed the book thoroughly, and REALLY appreciated the narrator. I am often leery to purchase audio books because if the narrator's voice/inflection is bad, no matter how good the book is, I can't finish it. Both the fun twist of a classic and the narration made this a delightful way to spend my weekend! (Kitty's character development was a fun addition to this reimagined classic!)

Frustrating, even for these two

JAFF readers know to expect a duty driven Darcy and a Lizzy that can be stubborn and easily unsure of Darcy based on her prior prejudices against him, but these two take it to a new level. The story started out very well and Ms. Grace does a fine job of telling the tale, but eventually I found myself wanting them to wake up and smell the coffee already.

Each time we thought Darcy would discover “the lie” and take control of his own life, as we know he usually does, it just fails to happen and he spouts his duty above all else mantra. Our obstinate, headstrong Lizzy, likewise, is ever more so in this story and it all gets rather frustrating by the final chapters.

I like it even more on audiobook

I read this book when it was released and I enjoyed it a lot and gave it a 4.5 stars out of 5. However, I think the audiobook makes it soo good. I have to say that this is only the second book I listen to and it happens to be the same narrator. I enjoy immensely the voices of this narrator.

Bingley's voice may be quite close to Darcy but he appears very little.

Great Variation

This is another great story from Angela Schroder about our favorite couple. I enjoyed the unique story line and the narrator. Elizabeth Grace is fast becoming a favorite of mine. She truly brings the story to life.

Great story and performance

Brilliantly narrated by Elizabeth Grace with a performance that really stands out. Well done!

The friendship of ODC that was developed was such a nice change from much of the angst that happens between them in not just the original, but many variations. I just enjoyed it so much. Kitty was great in this book, and even Lydia comes through it nicely, without her or Wickham ever really taking over the story. Well written. I’m off to see if this author has more to entertain me. If not, I hope she’ll write more.

Wonderful JAFF Variation

Elizabeth Grace as always is amazing with the narration of the tale.

Storyline doesn't follow cannon and is quite wonderfully unique.
