Dark and twisted family roots threaten to strangle their home's foundations in this chilling haunted house novel from the award-winning master of modern horror, T. Kingfisher.
In this ordinary North Carolina suburb, family secrets are always in bloom.
Samantha Montgomery pulls into the driveway of her family home to find a massive black vulture perched on the mailbox, staring at the house.
Inside, everything has changed. Gone is the eclectic warmth Sam expects; instead the walls are a sterile white. Now, it’s very important to say grace before dinner, and her mother won’t hear a word against Sam’s long-dead and little-missed grandmother, who was the first to put down roots in this small southern town.
The longer Sam stays, the stranger things get. And every day, more vultures circle overhead…©2023 Ursula Vernon (P)2023 W. F. Howes Ltd Fantasy Horror Scary Suspense Thriller & Suspense Fiction Paranormal Haunted

If you want bone chilling terror from page one this probably isn’t for you. But if you want something comforting and amusing with a really likeable main character, all combined with genuinely creepy imagery and a building horror then this is perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought the narrator was excellent.

Listening to T.Kingfisher story is like a nice afternoon stroll in the summer down a familiar country lane. Except with cool monsters and horror.

always a pleasure

Really enjoyed this. Thought it was well narrated and the characters likeable. As usual the authors humour throughout is brilliant.

Fun and bizarre

Too slower burn for me, for a horror story. Not scary at all. Not what I'd expected from the description

the last few chapters were the only time it got going

3.5 stars. This is my first book by T. Kingfisher and I enjoyed it. I think I may have enjoyed it more though in physical form.

There was definitely the premise for it to be suspenseful and tense but I didn't really get that from the narration, so that has a bit of an effect on my star rating but I still enjoyed the story and will most likely read more from this author.

it was ok
