About this listen

This year marks 50 years in print for Anne Digby's debut novel. Here, narrator Sally Orr Ewing brings the unabridged story vividly to life. The artwork is adapted from the iconic 1970s Beryl Sanders cover.

Mary and Anna are best friends. They both live the same happy lives on Chestnut Farm and they both ride the same horse, September. They are equal in everything, particularly their love for September, even though Anna's dad owns the farm and Mary's his hard-up employee. But when Anna is sent away to boarding school, Mary's status changes. Her connection to September is threatened and September himself is in danger.

Digby's other books on Audible include First Term at Trebizon and The Naughtiest Girl Keeps a Secret.

Critic reviews

"Ewing brings out the class differences especially between the two men....Heartbreaking drama shows Mary's core of steel. As well as a poignant story set in simpler times there's horse detail that adds to the appeal." (AudioFile Magazine)

Great story, remembered it from my youth. The narration was very strange though - often pausing between words or putting emphasis in odd places. It sounds as if the narrator is being distracted by something or is trying to read aloud while listening to something else.

Was the narrator multitasking?!

Such a heartwarming story with a happy ending. Audible offered this to me because I listened (twice now) to First Term at Trebizon, a book I read as a child, by the same author. This one was new to me, apparently Anne Digby's first novel from the 1970s. Great discovery. Highly recommended.

Lovely story
