About this listen

She crossed the world to marry a stranger

When Elizabeth Morton's father asks her to travel to the other side of the world to marry a man she's never met, she is stunned. It's 1920 and a woman has rights. But her choices are removed when she is raped by her brother-in-law and thrown out of her own home by her sister.

When Michael Winterbourne wakes with a hangover after his engagement celebrations, he is about to be the cause of a terrible tragedy that will destroy his family, turn his life upside down and catapult him into leaving England.

Elizabeth, born into a prosperous family, and Michael, a miner, come from different worlds. They would never have met but the SS Historic, bound for Sydney, is a ship with only one class.

Falling in love should have been the end to all their troubles. But fate and the mysterious Jack Kidd make sure it's only the beginning.

The story was entertaining, but predictable so somewhat disappointing. However, it was let down badly by really poor quality editing - the worst I’ve heard on an Audible book. In a few places, phrases were repeated (sounding like second ‘takes’ hadn’t been edited out), the rhythm and cadence weren’t great and the chapter announcements were badly edited in, so started when the narrator had barely finished speaking, while there were very long pauses at other times. The narrator was clear, but lacked emotion in many instances and often sounded like she was reading the news.

Poor quality recording

I absolutely loved this story. I have listened to the sequel to this already and came back to listen to this first one which was every bit as good as the 2nd and great to hear more of the backstory of the characters. Would rate the story 5 ⭐️ and would like to read the books now too.
Unfortunately the audio was absolutely terrible. I did get used to it and the story was so good I just went with it, but the narrator was extremely wooden and the editing bad - the chapter headings were edited in too quickly after the previous chapter ended, there were pauses where you could hear faint fuzzy noise and at times the narrator got bits wrong or repeated sections and these were not edited out. The sequel was narrated by someone else so hopefully this will or happen again. I look forward to reading the 3rd book in the series next.
Overall 4 ⭐️ let down by the audio quality, otherwise it would have been 5 ⭐️ .

Brilliant story, poor audio
