About this listen

England, 1716. The only certainty in a thief's life… is death.

Christopher Templeton is a lawyer whose conscience troubles him. He knows many of the secrets of The Fellowship, the shadowy group profiting from the civil unrest in the nation, and has intimated to the Company of Rogues that he is willing to share them.

The problem is, he has vanished. Jonas Flynt – thief, gambler, killer – still recovering from a duel with death upon the frozen Thames, is tasked with finding him.

The trail takes him from the dark slums of London to a quiet village in the north of England, where all is not as it seems. But while he hunts for the missing man, someone else may be stalking him… someone with murder in their heart.

The new gripping historical mystery from the author of An Honorable Thief, longlisted for the McIlvanney Prize 2023. Perfect for fans of Abir Mukherjee, Craig Russell and S.G. MacLean.

The narration of this book quickly took me away from the current day and deposited me in the grips of the story. You cannot help but be empathic to the main character as it is well written. The story is well thought through and continually makes you want to keep going. I thoroughly recommend this book but advise people to start with the first in the series.

Outstanding narration of a gripping book

A Grave for a Thief is the third outing of Jonas Flynt and a satisfying one too, performed by the superb and richly voiced David Monteath. Douglas Skelton may initially have hesitated to write historical fiction, but he has well and truly taken to the genre with magnificent results. He builds credible worlds and characters that are rarely two dimensional. He ensures that you can believe you are there and witnessing sights, sound, smells, and atmosphere. This novel is in two halves. The initial ground laying when you are introduced to many characters and the urgency builds as does the questioning of which characters are genuine or dishonest. This includes and an old friend that keeps Jonas guessing. In benefit to the novel, this friend is rarely sombre and provides cheery relief often. He also tries to help Jonas escape his past at least the grip it has on his mind. Skelton shows again his ability to create characters that you can readily believe. There are many subtleties in this novel that make Jonas Flynt and those he comes into contact with dimensions, and potential decisions that are ripe for follow up beyond this particular novel. Whilst this is the third novel in the series it is the last currently available on Audible. There are further novels in print format. Let us hope that Audible allows its listeners further opportunities to listen to those other adventures. A thoroughly recommended audio-book. One to enjoy, but my advice is to listen the previous two novels first.
