About this listen

Max Skinner, man about town and successful City slicker, finds himself suddenly redundant and instead of rejoining the rat race he has an opportunity to start a new life when he finds he has inherited an 18th century vineyard in Provence. It sounds ideal but life has a habit of surprising even in paradise.

Peter Mayle's delightful novel will enchant the audiences who bought A YEAR IN PROVENCE and TOUJOURS PROVENCE in their millions. Affectionate and witty, his unerring eye for human eccentricity and ambition results in great entertainment and a page-turning narrative. Once more, he has created his own vibrant world in which thousands will want to be occupants.©2004 Escargot Productions

Critic reviews

The charming bouquet is uncorked for you by Mayle. He has an unflinching eye for local detail in the zany crime caper set in Bordeaux.
Entertaining stuff- but you might find yourself gasping for a glass of the red stuff.
Through deliciously evocative descriptions of the landscape and great characterisation, you'll find yourself foregoing meals in order to find out what happens next.
A feel-good story with a good plot and plenty of humour. A very enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a feel-good story about sunshine, friends and wine in the South of France.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Good Year to be better than the print version?

Not particularly but I read the book years ago, greatly enjoyed it, and wanted to re-hear the story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Good Year?

The final twist

What about Time Pigott-Smith’s performance did you like?

Really enjoyable.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, definitely, and ache for the good life portrayed so wonderfully.

Another *very* good story from Peter Mayle

Wonderful gentle story with all the usual wit of Peter Mayle about Provence, the English and life in France.

Feel like in France

This is my go to story when I want to relax and need something to lift my spirits. Tim Piggott Smith’s narration is excellent.
