About this listen
Arthur
When I was squeezing rescue dogs and cats into my small house, all I wanted was to not turn away a pet in need. Opening the Safe Haven Pet Rescue was a dream come true. But when I get hurt, standing between a man with a gun and a stray dog, I realize I still can't do it all.
My injured leg, a concussion, having to lean on my friends, and realizing how helpless I feel, throws me back to my childhood when nothing I did ever seemed to be enough. But there's one silver lining. Brooklyn West. He's the kind of guy who holds a stranger’s hand in a crisis. He's great with my dogs, even cranky little Chili, and really wants to help the shelter. I like watching him be a protective big brother when his sister turns up on his doorstep, even though I think there's pain underneath his sunny smiles. But as we move toward friendship, I keep looking for the strings, and wondering how I'll pay him back, because nothing in my life can be that sweet, or that simple.
Brooklyn
I went through medical hell, and came out the other side with enough money to move to the opposite side of the country and start the doggie daycare business of my dreams. The cherry on top of that good luck is meeting Arthur Bjornsson. Big, wild-bearded, soft-voiced Arthur is the kind of guy my family would've ridiculed. He's warm-hearted and willing to throw himself into harm's way to save one pathetic stray dog.
He's the kind of guy who gives me back some faith in humanity. But when my underage sister Cheyenne shows up on my doorstep, on the run from the family I thought I'd escaped, my old life and new collide. I want to help Arthur, get to know him, and, as he heals, I want more than just friendship. But Cheyenne brings legal risks, a teen on the other side of my bedroom wall, and the threat of retribution from our family. The simple relationship I thought Arthur and I were building is suddenly messy as hell. I don't know how we'll get through this to reach the furever home I so desperately want.

And what a story. I couldn’t have asked for anything more, except for maybe a bit more Kevin - with his innate sense of responsibility I can’t quite believe Kevin didn’t insist on visiting Arthur at Brooklyn’s, walking the dogs etc.
It had plenty of excitement for someone who normally lives the quiet life with his rescue dogs.
Brooklyn was a lovely match for Arthur and their relationship, while quick, did feel organic. Running away from his past, all he wanted was a quiet life in Gaynor Beach running his doggy daycare. Did he get it, no he didn’t.
And of course there were the dogs, so many fur babies with distinct personalities, and intrinsic to the story.
We get cameos from plenty of the other men of Gaynor Beach, giving little catch ups with some of the couples.
The narrator does a solid job, with two distinct voices for the leads (helpfully Brooklyn had a New York accent).
Was Arthur’s story worth the wait? Yes, yes it was.
I've been waiting furever for Arthur's story

He's so kind and caring and absolutely deserves someone to live him unconditionally and puts him first.
Arthur is seriously injured helping a known kid who was trying to protect a dog.
Brooklyn is there to help and offers his home to help Arthur recuperate and care for his menagerie.
They hit it off and then trouble comes knocking in the middle of the night in the form of Brooklyn's sister Cheyenne.
She's running from their horrible family and their intentions to marry her off to a dangerous man.
I really enjoyed seeing them all work through their problems, individually and together as a tentative new family.
There is some danger but thankfully it's resolved quickly and of course I loved all the animal characters and their sweet shenanigans and intuitive care for their people.
Michael Ferraiuolo did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.
Bittersweet ending

Custody of Minor sister
TW: religious cult family that is trying to kidnap and force marry underage girl
This can be read as a standalone. There are side characters that pop in that were from other books but it isn't necessary to know them. I have only read the other 2 books by Gabbi in this series.
I almost wish that I went into this one without knowing the other 2 books because I found myself comparing it to them and missing Mama's huge family. Also, this book features lots of dogs in a pack and I missed the individual quarks that the individual dog characters had in the other 2 books.
I enjoyed this story well enough. There wasn't any relationship angst, just lots of plot drama, which I enjoyed. I didn’t struggle to finish it. I just prob won't listen to it ever again.
The 2 MCs were likeable and had good chemistry. I did find their relationship development overly rushed though.
The sister character plays a huge role the entirety of the book. While she redeemed herself in the end, I found the character really obnoxious for the first while, and it kind of ruined a bit of the enjoyment for me. Why be rude to someone doing you a favor?!
I do love a good drama but this plot is a bit too close to today's world and I think that also ruined the enjoyment for me. I read to escape reality. These characters were definitely a more extreme version but it still felt too close for comfort to what's happening today.
The narrator did a great job. He expressed the emotions really well and brought the story to life. He kept a good flow and I found his voice/accent pleasant to listen too. He gave all the characters, even the side characters, their own distinct voice that suited each of them perfectly, making it easy to follow the story and a pleasure to listen to. He does female and kid voices so well.
3.5 stars for plot

They both have a lot of background issues, I wouldn’t call it baggage, but they certainly have “history“! And some of the history rears its head up at the beginning of their relationship.
This book is very sweet, but also full of action (I mean, Arthur gets shot in chapter one- unrelated to aforementioned history btw) and jam-packed of a rollercoaster of emotions!
As usual, a great performance by Michael Ferraiuolo, who’s capable of giving any character an extra depth.
Love and action.
