When Detective Chief Inspector John Shadow is called to Kirkdale Castle to investigate the death of a handsome racehorse trainer during a shooting party, he’s immersed in painful childhood memories. Having previously listened to A Roman Shadow I was very much looking forward to this release, but I was amazed at just how much I enjoyed it, the story had me rivetted all day. It's full of dubious characters and horsey goings on, fabulous stuff, hugely amusing.

It is, in Jimmy Chang's words, 'a proper country house murder mystery'. I never did guess the killer (s?) and I'm still baffled by one part of the story that I may go back to and listen to over again because I'm sure I must have missed something, or there's a chapter missing perhaps, I'll update if I find out. I did find the ending extremely satisfactory so all in all I recommend this book if you like an amusing cosy mystery.

I was lucky enough to receive my copy free of charge in exchange for my honest review, but I'll happily pay a credit for the next book if and when it's released on audible, which I hope will be soon.
