About this listen

Raising a serial killer

A Father's search for answers

In July of 1991, the country was shocked by the unfathomable crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. But no one was more shocked than his parents. In A Father's Story, the listener becomes witness to the incremental unraveling of a parent's image of their child, and the thousand different reactions that follow. In his attempt to understand the nature of his son's psychosis, Lionel Dahmer methodically scrutinizes every possible contributing factor to his son's madness. His desperation is palpable as he searches for clues in the emotional, psychological, and genetic landscape of his son's life.

Riveting and soul-wrenching, this unprecedented memoir is the confession of a father who must confront the saddest truth a human can know—that his child has somehow crossed the line that separates the human from the monstrous.

Firstly I Love the voice and accent of the man who read this audio book, listened to it 3 times and enjoyed it just asmuch as the first. I have massive respect and sympathy for Lionel I think he is a great father/husband/son who always did the best considering the circumstances and constant issues he had supporting his family especially being with Joyce. Obviously what Jeffrey did was disgusting (personally what he did to his victims ive never looked properly into) and A Father's Story doesn't go into gory details, but how Jeffrey became that way just fascinates and holds my attention. From my perception this book is ordered and broken down beautifully and explained detailed without being dragged out, full of the origins of his perception and influence on his sons life and also Lionel is very open about theories of passing down traits he also noticed in his own adolescence, you can feel some guilt from Lionel, I can't articulate my appreciation for it exactly the way I want to but so I'll finish here finally by saying this is a must if you are also intrigued by Jeffrey Dahmer not just the crimes.

If you have watched and enjoyed the Netflix series Dahmer, this book is a must. Previous reviews mentioned that the narrator has a whistle, but I barely noticed - don't let that put you off!

Very Interesting

After watching the Netflix series I downloaded this, and “enjoyed” (not the appropriate word really) listening to this. It is well written and clearly cathartic for Lionel. Highly recommended.

A very sad read, well written

poignant and sad, especially as a parent I can feel the pain and desperate attempt to find answers and conclusions to such unspeakable questions Lionel and his wife faced.

Very good book, honest reflection by Jeff Dahmer's father. Explores his own influence over his son's behaviour. He has gone as far as reasonably possible. Beyond the story itself, this presents a salutary lesson on the real complexity of human existence.
