About this listen

The year 1792. With French revolutionary agents traveling freely but secretly between Ireland and England and war with France inevitable, the English government of Mr. Pitt is desperately anxious to uncover any plots between Irish rebels and the French.

Lieutenant James Merriman with his ship, the sloop Aphrodite, is ordered to the Irish Sea to assist the principal treasury agent Mr. Grahame in this work. Merriman is plunged headlong into the world of espionage and when Grahame is seriously wounded it falls to Merriman to carry on the investigation.

Young James Merriman must keep all his wits about him to foil these plans, especially when his adversary is revealed to be an exceptional French agent—Henri Moreau who hopes that by helping the Irish to throw off the English yoke, France will be able to use Irish ports from which to attack England.

I loved the narration of Nigel Peever, who brings the sea salt to your ears. Perfect

Lieutenant Merriman is on leave after being Injured in a battle with Barbary pirates. He is resting up at his family's home near Chester. When he learns smugglers have taken a Customs ship., he starts to investigate and the rumours of Irish and French involvement.

This is a proper high sea adventure , with smugglers, action and oh a pirate.

Despite having already read A Certain Threat when first published I found this audio version thoroughly enjoyable to listen to.
I felt as if I had been transported to the late 18th century and drawn into the plot afresh as Nigel Peever’s narration was so characterful and engaging.
Really looking forward to hearing the next book in the series.

A Great Seafaring Yarn!

I really enjoyed this book and story line. Adventures on the high seas are back with a vengeance! The characters are realistic and represent the age in which they are written. If you’ve enjoyed the modern classic sea faring, naval books like Post Captain and Master and Commander etc. then this book is for you!
One of the main reasons I purchase a lot of books on Audible is that I travel with work a lot, therefore the narration needs to be good. Nigel Peever is by far the best narrator on Audible. Professionally produced with the right amount of sound effects, music, and correct accents, he elevates any story he reads into another class.

A good old fashioned blood and thunder book
