About this listen

Detective Jo Shaw has it all worked out. She’s good at her job, she has loads of mates, and she likes being single. She doesn’t need complications, but an emergency call to the stabbing of a young woman brings plenty of those. Jo has to risk her career to save the woman’s life, and a bad night gets worse when the trauma surgeon turns out to be Isla Munro, Jo’s only real love, who walked out on her 15 years ago and never came back.

With the victim’s children missing and the husband the prime suspect, Jo’s investigation is stonewalled by a community living in fear. As one dead end leads to another, she and Isla are forced to put their differences aside and work together. But the case is far more dangerous than Jo realizes, and her determination to sort the truth from the lies may put her own life on the line.

Cari has a knack of taking you on a thrilling journey and Nicola brings her characters to life, her narration is second to none. The characters are honest down to earth front line grafters, and her writing comes from a place of experience which makes it all the more worthwhile. Cari is a master of her craft and brings the reality of daily struggles experienced by dedicated underfunded NHS and police staff to her stories. This book is no exception. I felt emersed throughout. Recommend having a selection box within easy reach to accompany this book.

Another Cari corker

To have Cari writing the story and Nicky bringing the characters to life you are on to a firm winner.

what happens when two characters meet up after 15 years working on the same case. Jo from the North and isla from Scotland and Jo's sidekick Sully. This story has plenty of humour, sweets and a very good plot line. you've got to read it I've listened to it 4 times already.

what a Combination

I really enjoyed A Calculated Risk. It is a well written, realistic police / medical drama with lots of dark moments and plot twists that kept me listening and guessing. There are also plenty of laughs and lighter moments to keep gloom at bay and it is all threaded together with a f/f love story.

Cari Hunter has a wonderful ability to write likeable MCs that one can identify with and use local knowledge of the area, it's landscapes, weather, customs, people, their quirky modes of speech and humour to bring life to her novels.

Nicola Victoria Vincent's narration builds on the plot and brings it and all the characters fully to life so, as a listener, you feel as if you know these people personally. Her superb ability as a reader includes a genius ability for acting out different voices and accents. This means each of the many characters are unique and, unlike most audiobooks with a single narrator, the listener is never confused about who is speaking.

I strongly recommend all Cari Hunter / Nicola Victoria Vincent audiobooks.

An exciting listen from the Hunter / Vincent combo

💖I LOVED THIS💖
This is a fantastic rollercoaster story that had me on the edge of my seat. It was exciting and enthralling and showed how gangs in the UK can influence society's most vulnerable. Nicola Victoria Vincent was exceptional in her performance and brought together the characters struggles expertly and made them live!
