About this listen

Claire North shortlisted for the Sunday Times PFD Young Writer of the Year Award.

From one of the most original new voices in modern fiction comes a startling vision of a world where you can get away with anything....

Theo Miller knows the value of human life - to the very last penny.

Working in the Criminal Audit Office, he assesses each crime that crosses his desk and makes sure the correct debt to society is paid in full.

But when his ex-lover is killed, it's different. This is one death he can't let become merely an entry on a balance sheet.

Because when the richest in the world are getting away with murder, sometimes the numbers just don't add up.

From the award-winning Claire North comes an electrifying and provocative new novel which will resonate with readers around the world.

Critic reviews

An extraordinary novel that stands with the best of dystopian fiction, with echoes of The Handmaid's Tale (Cory Doctorow on 84K)

This book is full of characters who are unable to finish a sentence and it drove me mad! I love 'Fifteen Lives' and 'Touch' and Peter Kenny is my favourite narrator, but even he couldn't rescue this book from an incredibly irritating writing style. Having listened to the book, rather than reading it, I wonder how it looks on the page. Are all the unfinished sentences followed by a series of dots....?
The corporate dystopia concept is chilling and believable and the narrative makes its way satisfyingly enough to a conclusion, but the characters remain rather insubstantial, only half-glimpsed amongst their unfinished musings.

Disappointing after her earlier works

Dark, sad and frightening... clearly a play on Orwell’s 1984 but brought up to date so you can actually imagining it happening.

I can’t stop thinking about this

What an author. Always a great story with people to love that you did not think you would while discussing hard subjects in a human and lovely way. That said this is bleak so watch out. And of course our rave fave Peter nails the reading. Special stuff indeed.

Claire is awesome

I've really enjoyed the Claire North books I've listened to so far but, whilst I didn't hate 84K, I didn't take to it in the way I did the others. It's an interesting story, if a little fragmented (this is an artistic decision), and it's beautifully narrated, but it is RELENTLESSLY depressing! It's set in an all too believable near future dystopia which, because it seems so plausible, is rather hard to stomach. I probably won't go back to this one as I have the others!

Not sure about this one

I thought this was going to be a detective type book from the initial blurb but I was so wrong. I really tried to like this book and did stick it to the end but there really wasn't anything. The book moved back and forth so much that I couldn't really keep track of what was going on, perhaps it is clearer in the written version but in the audiobook there was no real indication. The characters weren't developed enough to like. The story was just boring and depressing, such a shame because I liked her other books. If I could get those hours back again I would.

This book is nothing like the initial description!!
